Thursday Morning. Sept. 21, 1882.
With this week’s paper we make
our bow to the people of Dade county.
We do so for cur own pecuniary inter
est, hut we do so with regret. Carry
ing with us a kindly feeling for the
people we have been with this summer,
we hope to carry a'so their good wishes
and friendship. If ever we crossed
you, it was through pure motives and
not through malice. Remember our
intentions, and not our actions. For
get our faults, hut remember that,
although we leave Rising Fawn, where
we have spent many pleasant hours,
it is not to forget, and that its people,
one and all, will forever occupy a warm
place in this heart of
Ed. Lee Sutton.
Sheriff Cate and Deputy Sheriff J.
J. Conway, of Hamilton county,
Tenn., left Chattanooga last week to
take thiee prisoners to Knoxville, one
of them being John Taylor, who killed
Capt. Fletcher in Chattanooga some
time ago. At Sweetwater, the traiu
was boarded by three men, who, when
the train reached Philadelphia attacked
the sheriff and his deputy, killing
them both, and releasing John. Ex
citement ran high all over the state,
' and a reward of $5,500 was offered
for the murderers. J'he rescuers were
brothers of John y.iylor. Pursuit is
being vigorously made for the capture
of the murdereis. No jury will be
needed in their case, it they arc ever
captured.
Read the communication from Fitz
"Whacker in this issue. Wccommend
it to the people of Dade, and especially
around our little town. No truer sen.
timents were ever uttcicd than is em
bodied in this letter. The awful trag
edy enacted here list Saturday would
not have been but for whisky. Wo*
do not wish to be understood as con
demning 01 censuring anyone, but out
of a true interest in the welfare of this
people, whom we have learned to love,
we would lepeat to them the counsel
of the wise.
A terrible tragedy was enacted in
Walker county. Ren Lively had
raised a crop of cane on Wilse Rcaird’s
farm, and in a division last Thursday
a quarrel arose. Lively picked up a
stick and met Deaird, who stabbed
him twice in the region of the heart.
Lively died of his wounds next day.
He was a single man of highly ic
spectable character, and a member of!
the Baptist church. L’eaird was ar
rested and bound over for manslaugh

SELF DEFENSE.
The First Law of Nature Neces
sary.
Last Saturday was pay-day at the
Furnace, and as usual the town was
tilled with a drinking, carousing rab
ble. The negroes particularly were
very boisterous, and seemed determined
to cut up as much as possible. The
marshal, Mr. J. M. Curry, did all that
man could do to keep the town orderly.
Will Dempson, a notorious character,
came to town and bought a pistol.
Getting a good supply of whiskey on
board, he began swearing loudly,
boasting that he had whipped four
men at Whitesides, Tenii., and that
no policeman could at test
him. Marshal Curry stepped into
Bell’s saloon, where Dempson was, and
as he could not find Deputy Lee, deter
mined to arrest the man himself. Pre
senting his pistol, ho told Dempson t>
consider himself a prisoner. Catching
hold of h tin, the Marshal stepped out
the back door of the sa'oon, when the
negro drew his pistol from his pocket,
cocked, and placed it against Curry’s
breast. Striking it down, Curry fired,
the hall (a 38) striking Dempson just
below- the left nipple. Cutty kept his
hand on the prisoner’s pistol until he
stopped struggling and fell, when he
wienched it away from the negro.
It was immediately evident that Demp
son had received his death wound, and
the greatest excitement prevailed. The
negroes swarmed into town, aud were
loud and hitter in their denunciations
of the Marshal, the corporation, and
the whites generally. Marshal Curry
immediately surrendered himself to
Deputy Sheriff Byrd, to await the re
sult of the shot. The wounded man
was carried over to the Furnace, where
lie died at 3 o’clock Sunday morning.
Coroner Kiser appeared Sunday, and
summoning a jury, held at inqust at 5
o’clock Sunday evening; While the
evidence was being given in the negroes
swore profusely, declaring that who
eve£ tAtified certain things would
swear a he. The jury found that
deceased came to his death at the hands
of J. M. Curiy. Further action was
set aside, and the Marshal was carried
to Trenton Sunday night, and the
matter will go before the grand jury.
It is the universal verdict here that
Mr. Curry acted in self-defense. Ac
cording to the statement of Mr. James
Steel, who saw the whole of it, it is
positively a clear case. The latest
news now (Tuesday noon) is that Mr.
Curry will be promptly exhonoratod.
If so, let the corporation have the
manhood to stand firmly by him. YYe
need a man in the marshal’s office who
will exercise his duty, regardless o(
consequences. Mr. Cut ty is the man,
and every man will stand firmly by
him.
News from the county scat to-day
is to the effect that the grand jury have
dilligoutly searched for the facts in
the charge against Maishal Jubc M
Curry, with no result as yet. Every
one expre-ses the opinion that no bill
will be found.
A negro left here on the train yes
terday morning with a shot gun. He
was overheard to make threats of us
ing his gun when le got to Renton,
iho supposition being that Marshal
Curry was his intended victim. Our
grnVi j uy kindly waited on him, and
.agreed to furnish him lodging until he
hail an opportunity of consulting with
Judge Fain.
