Foot old Virginia! While the other

This evening as I sit here, the siVect
autumnal sunlight falling around me
in golden sheen; while far away he is
peeping over the tree tops, tinging

While viewing such a scene methiuks
had Moore visited our beautiful Lot k -

deserves.
But thoughts whither hast thou led
me? I sit down here to read “Dray
ton's” letters Shout “Girls,” to find
if he had not omitted something that
I or some one else might say, as it is
a subject I have lni*g ; fang been deep
ly interested in, but had not the cour
age to iutroluee the topic to the gaze
of the public. Yes, UVoi slniC I passed
the rubicou of youth l have observed
with no little anxiety (lie lack of in
terest the mu.) o ily of our girls take in
self-culture. Too many of thtsin es
teeming their mental faculties, subor
diftate to that of physical beauty, cul
tivating the one exclusive the other.
Nor is this the only evil practiced by
our sex, that of reading novels which
mail/ <rf the' precious mo

flielt fnothers, Who should teach them'
by example that such reading (or too
much of h) is not truly detrimental to
their Happiness here hut hereafter, j
Gfien 1 have thought while listening
to bright young girls, Dying to enter
tain visitors. Ah, it yon had spent
but half the time reading science and
history, cither sacied or pro Cue, that
you have in porting over the "good
stories” which Constitute' fhe bulk of
reading contained fn tire greater p;ut
of the peiiodicals of otfr dat and gen

best mode of improving the conversa
tional power I hate ever seen practiced
was to read much, read good authors,
and every beautiful oi instructive sen
tence that you read commit it to nioin
ory or have a blank hook and note
them down, then at some leisure mo
ment. take the authors ideas and clothe
them in language all your own. Prac
tice this method of study one year
only and yofi will fle gratified to find
what ;t large fund of ideas you can
command whenever occasion demands.
I y o[te sa\s, “an honest man is the no*
blest Work of God.” '/hat may he
so, but )ilaee a beautiful, accomplished
woman, whose charm.* of mind add
lustre to the elegance of farm, on the
highest plane of society, and she will
command more homage than lie, not
only of the opposite sex, but her own.
Knowing this, we nrCthers, if we
would mend the world, wc must mend
ourselves and teach our daughters to
be not what we are, but what they
should he. If we in lieu ot light read
ing place always in their reach, good
interesting books, memoirs of good and
noble Women, believe me your heart
will nevCr be broken by a candestine,
worthless, marriage; neither will a
husband take to his fireside an empty

is nearly full and I have not said half
of what I wished to say, perhaps I
may finish sometime.
