I asked her why she beat them and
she told me they were bad.
“SURE, I CAN GET AWAY FROM IT ANY TIME”
It’s bad enough to be under a man's thumb.
How much worse to be under the thumb of whiskey. Escape is possible, but it all rests upon determination.

Georgia Sheriff Loses
in His Race With Death
After Confessing Murder, Al
bert Davis, of Brunswick,
Dies in New Orleans.
New Orleans.—Death cheated Sheriff
Berry, of Glynn county, Georgia, of a
prisoner here Friday, Alien Albert Da
vis died In a hospital Just as the aher
lff was going to the Institution to take
charge of him.
Realizing that he was in the last
stages of tuberculosis, Davis, accord
ing to the police, cleared a murder
mystery Tuesday by confessing he
killed his sister-in-law last November
near Brunswick, Ga. His brother was
held In connection with the crime.
Davis, the police say, never admit
ted why he killed the woman.
Case Complicated.
Brunswick, Ga. —The death In New
Orleans Friday of A. R. Davis, tlie self
confessed murderer f Mrs. Mary Da
vis, has somewhat complicated the
case against V. H. Davis, brother of
the dead man and husband of the mur
dered woman.
It was stated yesterday afternoon
that attorneys representing Davis
would file a motion for bail, but such
a move would be strenuously opposed
by stHte's attorney. It Is more than
probable that the husband will have
to face trial again In June.
Many contend that the confession
of the brother was made only in an
effort to clear the husband and they
still entertain the belief that they were
both Implicated tn the murder.
Confesses He Murdered
His Wife 29 Years Ago
. -
Erie, P a .—That John Turner. S 3
years old, had confessed he murdered
his wife twenty-nine years ago, was
the statement made Friday to the dis
trict attorney by Rev. John B. Cook,
pastor of tile Methodist Episcopal
church at Girard, I’a.
According to the story told the dis
trict attorney. Turner, who has been
very 111, summoned Rev. Mr. Cook to
his home and told him that while the
Turners lived at Llnesvllle, Pa., he be
came angry at his wife and hit her
with a club. He was tried for the
crime but was acquitted by the testi
mony of members of the family. The
Jury held that Mrs. Turner had died
as the result of a fall.
TYPHOID FEVER IS~THE
PENALTY FOR EATING DIRT
Washington.—Typhoid fever Is the
penalty for eating and drinking dirt,
testified Surgeon I.eslle M. l.umsden
of the public health service before the
senate committee, Friday, considering
a bill for federal investigation of mul
arJa and typhoid.
He stated that within 24 hours of
Washington he could find a hundred
cities and towns drinking water from
their own sewers. At any time, he
added, this might subject them to a
typhoid fever epidemic.
GOETHALS sms
IT WONT WORK
Ditch Digger Declares Ma
chinery Used on Canal Not
Proper For Work on Missis
sippi. i
Washington.—Col. Geo. W. Goethals
threw a wet blanket Friday on the
suggestion that machinery employed
In construction of the Panama Canal
might be used to advantage in flood
protection work In the Mississippi val
ley. Senator Smith of Michigan, had
made the suggestion in the consider
ation by the eonunerec committee of
the Uansdell bill appropriating up
wards of J«0,000,000 for Mississippi
river improvements, that the canal
machinery might be used.
Col. Goethals told the committee it
would not pay to bring any of the
machinery, except perhaps some of
the dredges, to the United States for
any kind of work. That was due part
ly to the fact, he said, that the ma
chinery had not been kept in condi
tion. Parts of machines no longer
needed, he said, had been used to re
pair others instead of buying new
parts.
Much of the equipment would be
useless in the kind of work proposed,
lie said, even if it were in good con
dition.
