I PERSONAL NEWS ITEMS.
Mr. John Oliver Chenault of Chen
ault, Wilkes county, Georgia, wa* in
the city yesterday.
Mr. Chenault is a brother of Hon
orable Nick Chenault, the incumbent
state senator from that district. Both
of the brothers have large landed in
terests In Wilkes, Lincoln and Colum
bia counties.
Mr. Chenault is now eonfidtdit that
the Elberton and Eastern Railroad,
now running from Elberton tee Tignall,
will be extended to Lineolnton In the
near future.
He says the committee of citizens
appointed for that purpose have fin
ished their labors, having raised $50.-
000, the amount required, and that the
work of grading the line will be start
ed immediately.
The distance from Tignall to Lln
colnton is twenty miles and most of
it is light grading. It is probable that
the rails will be laid and trains run
ning within a year on the Lineolnton
extension.
From Elberton to Tignall, the road
has been in operation about a year,
and it Is said has done a flourishing
business. The length of the line in
operation is also about 20 miles, mak
ing 40 miles of the 75, the entire dis
tance between Augusta and Elberton
the completion of which is now as
sured.
Of the 35 miles from this city to
Lineolnton. upon which, as yet, no
| provision has been made for starting
the work, 15 miles has already been
graded. This Is through the roughest
portion of Columbia county and is
perhaps the roughest portion of the
Hue
. Mr. Chenault thinks it won't be long
before the entire line is completed into
Augusta, although this is somewhat
problematical, as he knows of no move
I at this time to begin, the work at this
' end. But nevertheless, he is jubilant
over the prospects of the road soon
running to Lineolnton as he has gome
plantations that it will pass near.
