Keeping Up With Uncle Sam
IN the last thirty-seven years of national progress, the Bell
•Telephone has played an important part.
Out of the public’s demand for universal service has grown
the Bell system, covering the entire country with one great in
tercommunicating system.
Today there are more than 7,500,000 telephones connected
by 14,000,000 miles of wire in the Bell system, and every day
the service is extended to meet the ever increasing needs of
the people.

"Tills is the greatest number of med

men on roll* to fire. The two ex
perts are the only experts in Augusta
who have qualified in long range
practice (800 and 1.000 yards). If the
requirement* are the same as last yca»
they will be the only officers sent to
Atlanta from Augusta to compete for
the state and Camp Perry teams (G.
O. No. 8, 1913). Some 6f these scores
were made by rifles which Were pitted
and worthies*. The IT. S. inspecting
officer condemned nine. These have
been shipped into the government to
be replaced by new ones. I know of
no other company in Augusta that
had any rifles in bad condition. Ile
low is the certificate of scores. It
must be signed by all commanding of
ficers:
“ T certify on bonnr that the fore
going report is correct.’
"11l conclusion. I wish to state, to
best of knowledge and belief, this Is
the only Infantry company who has
non-commissioned officers (sergeants
and corporals) sufficiently instructed
so they can read military maps, con
duct patrols, and who have studied
and applied minor tactics, anil enlist
ed men who are capable of dismant
ling, assembling, and properly caring
for their rifle* and can tell the names
and uses of principal parts of the 101
which the rifle contains.
"The public can judge from above
facts the condition of Company R. Ist
Infantry (Oglethorpe Infantry). It Is
the sourre of great gratification to
the officers and men of Company R
that this organization yhas not only
maintained its past excellent record
hut has even excelled its previous
standing.
