The Play Last Night
The New York Grand Opera Com
pany rendered "Kaust" last night he
tore an au Menrei which conatanti
decreased in numbers until the end
there was about one half of the origi
nal crowd on hand and tliev weie
nearly frozen it was an evening
in.wlnch warmth and good cheer were
conspicuous principalis by their ats
seme. Tlie singers had no cuance
to show off to their best advantage,
for they, too, were probably naif
frozen and it cannot be said that the
warmth of the applause made up for
pie absence of heat In the radiators.
There were several hundred people
scattered through the first floor, bal
cony and gallery at the start, but at
the end of the third act there was
almost a general exodus Kven with
their coats on many could not stand
the frosty atmosphere and to sum up
the entire affair In a word one may
say that It was a frost Not through
any fault of the performers, however,
beaeuse they were quite good, but
no auditor could warm up to such a
situation, no matter how good the
show might have been
As «e understand it the manage
ment issued a statement saying that
the entire affair Is very regretable
and that the lack of heat was due to
unforeseen circumstances over which
the manager had no control. It wilt
be recalled that the Sunday afternoon
concert was costponed because of the
heating apparatus being out of fix and
It seems that a new boiler, which
bad been ordered Installed, could not
be put up In time The management,
so the statement C >os. did not know
oT the inability to get the holler in
place until too late to make an an
nouncement.
However, it does seem that gas or
kerosene stoves or some sort of heat
could have been secured. The peo
ple who pay thelf money for seats
expect something In return
It ts not the desire of the writer
of this to he other than fair to the
(Irand management. Of course, mis
takes will occur sometimes In the
best regulated opera houses, just us
they occur in every other line of bus
Inoss. hut the public very olden can't
see It that way
However, when the Grand is weigh
t'd In the balance with some of \n
gusts'* other public utilities —no
names mentioned- It averages up
considerably higher as regards ser
vice. So those who wish to pan and
not sympathise at all with those In
charge of the opera house might
think a little before ; aiming too
much
As for the show. It has been thor
ough!' demonstrated that Augusta
doesn't care for Grand Opera or for
Shakespeare No use to bring these
attractions here The people want
minstrel shows and musical com. dies
and wise theatrical promoters will
bring nothing else along In the fu
