TUESDAY. MARCH 10 mir police FORCE 111 BERLIN t Unfavorable Comparisons Are Mad, : Between London Bob bies" and Sword Carrying Berlin Guards. Berlin,— No city tn the world In I'uriM'd with it more nrliltrur> isiliee forct than Berlin, but if wo ato to l><- , 'r the word of Herr von Jagow llie loud of the police department, we have only ourselves to blame, on aeeord *"« ,0 M* '*•«* •■very city nets jtiNt the police la deaervea." To a number of Berliner*. who. after visiting London made unfiivor ahle comparisons between the smiling, polite anil popular "bobbiei*" of that elty and the aword-carrying. steel helimeted trunrda of Berlin. Herr von Jagow replied that they might look for the reaeon of the difference In the laot that while Ixmiloncrs are a peuca* loving, law-abiding eet of people, we Berliners nre like wild beasts who must he curbed by unsparing use of sabre and baton, and to strengthen his argument he quoted the example of Johann Przygoda who drove at a fu rious fast trot, (almost as fast as the Imperial carriages and autos, he night have added, but he dhl not) towards the crowded Alexander plats disregarding a copper’s warning hand. The policeman seized the reins ami and stopped the truck, but as soon ns he let go the reins, the driver whipped up the horses and drove off at a gal lop. When the policeman again over took him by means of a street-car, the driver gave him a taste of his fists, whereupon the copper drew his sword, and drove it through the teamster's hand and afterwards wounded him in the head, and also seriously wounded the driver's brother who tried to shield him from the sword of the po liceman. It does not convince anybody here The root of the evil ia to be found in the fuct that while the Londoner sees u protector In every pollcemun, the Berliner looks upon every "schuti riutn” as an armed bumhi In pegm aion of autocratic powers and never hesitating to make use of his heavy baton or aword ngatnst anyone who tries to nrgue with him Instead of submitting meekly.
