WEDNESDAY. MARCH 11. Augusta-Brooklyn Baseball Game Postponed Until Next Week; the Grandstand is s Not Yet Finished In a talk with President K«lbflel*ch, Mils inurn Inn. he staged that there would |,« no baselmll name today, be tween the Augusta ‘ , Bllneh'• and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The name has been postponed until m-xt week, probably being played next Wednesday or Friday. The dav how* ever, hue not been definitely decided upon as yet. The reason for the postponement Is that the grandstand has not been fin ished as was expected It would be. Preslden Kalbflelsch said that he ci id not afford to have the stand tut*, > down upon the fans and If It should, •'they would lynch him." There were also several things Mtnnnlnit? in the wAy of having a gamp today, first tho grandstand, second there were but about four players that • inve been signed, third there were nu merous try-outs in the city, that Man ager Brmithers has not had a chance to see “what they have In them,” and With the Augusta Baseball “Player Try-Outs” The try-outs for the Augusta base ball team that are In the city are tak ing things easy and are not worrying much about not getting a place on tHo team. The majority of them arc whil ing away the- time at the Y. M. C. A.. playing checkers, etc. (One was heard to say, ‘•Now, isn't till* a fine game for a bunch of healthy men to play.”) Manager Brouthers Is trying them out as fast as possible, he having the field onlv for a short time each day, ns It was leased to the Brooklyn Dodg ers; but everything Is getting into shape, at least Brouthers for one Is satisfied that they are. COMMITTEES MET ON APPROPRIATIONS Cuts in Four Departments Agreed Upon By Members of the Various Committees. There were meetings yesterday aft ernoon of eouncllmanlc committers representing several departments and cuts In each of the departments were decided on. The fire department will he cut $1,710; the bridges and wharves committee. sx74 94; the canal sss<), and th waterworks $929. There will be a meeting soon of the appropriations committee when a re port will be foimulated for presenta tion to dty council. Tho fight which was made on the report of the sub-committee of the fi nance committee, which was told of in The Herald last week, and which re suited In a tie In the finance commit tee's meeting, has been decided by Councilman Jones, of the first ward, deciding to vote for a $75,000 recom mendation for the fire department. It will be recalled that Messrs. Haworth. Pilcher and Allen, the sub-committee, recommended that the appropriation for the police department be $95,000 and the file department be $75,000 Messrs, Martin. Jones and Boyce op posed this and as Mayor Ha.vne was not present the committee stood three to three. Mr. Jones gives Ills reason for changing his vote and deciding in favor of the $75,000 appropriation that If the appropriation for the fire de partment Is $70,000 then one engine company will have v to be eliminated and he believes that this will Impair the efficiency of the fire department. Those desiring n $90,000, and, If pos sible, an $X5,000 appropriation for the police department. have not yet agreed to the $95,000 and It Is possi ble that the fight on both departments will tie carried to the floor of council.
