is nothing to be done about it. We
sit here with a vague and fatuous
smile, like somebody who lias Just
missed the punt of a joke, knowing
that somethin*, heaven knows what,
was funny—and trying desperately
to repeat it to somebody else in
hopes that they may see something
in it.
Anyhow this is what happened.
Annie Ware came back. She bad
been unable to wait till Saturday
night. Wnich wasn't funny of course.
Then appeared threp white fel
lows from South Carolina who came
over full of high spirits and low de
signs yesterday, and. in attempting
to make a round of visits last night,
rang at the door of a colored parson
age. Here they encountered tne Dea
con. who valiantly stood out against
thtir determination to enter. Every
body was under a misapprehension.
What the deacon thought they were
is unknown, but they looked upon the
deacon as uu unsympathetic and
rather officious butler, to be intimi
dated and otnerwise shown hig place.
The deacon was in the end victorious
both last night and this morning, for
ha was dismissed by the court and
tha three were fined $lO apiece.
You will have to grant that there
was Something funny in tnat situa
tion.
Then a peg-legged man came up for
drunk. It seems he got druuk in Ma
con last night.
"What in tne world,” a3ked the
judge, "did you come over here for?”
"Came over to see you!” suavely
returned that gentleman.
Then there was the Irishman who
eame up for not having a dog license.
He had been told the other day to
get one, and had pleaded that he had
no money. He had nothing in the
world but the dog. This morning tie
said he had bought the license yester
dav.
"Where did you get the mon«y’”
asked Judge Irvin.

“Sold the dog," he sauly replied.
But the case which surfeited every
body with laughter for the res* of
the day was that against Tommv
Moss, colored. Here are the bare
facts:
Yesterday morning he w-ent to the
house of one Ceorge on Monroe
wlt 1 ,. a f|- iend. and knocked on
the door. He must have suspected
something probably. For his w-ife
wag in there, together with another
woman, t.eorge himself, and an odl
man named Jacob,
