It continues: "For the past three years the farm ers have had poor crops and the fall lire on acount of the frosts this year leaves them In a pitiable condition. "Men are subsisting on straw, the bark of trees, acorns and buckwheat chaff powdered and made into gruel. Mothers living on such food have been unable to feed their babies and have made a milk substitute out of the hulls of rice which they beat into a powder and mi* with boiling water. Embassy in London is Swamp ed With Letters From ‘Heirs’ Asking Best Way to Get Property. London.—The missing estate swin dle is evidently again being worked extensively In the United Htates. The embassy here Is overwhelmed with letters from American "heirs” asking how best to secure estates due them. Some letters Indicate that vletlms were Induced to part with all their property to pay expenses iff pseudo representa tives of the chancery court. Ten year* ago the state department at Washington received so many re quests about missing estates In chan cery that a special Investigation was made by Henry White, then first sec retary of the American embassy here He reported that It would be practi cally Impossible for any American to secure an estate from the court of chancery.
