Langfitt Praises Plans and Work Being Done on Levee Splendid Compliment at Country Club Dinner to Mr. Nisbet Wingfield, City Engineer, Who Has Charge of All the Work. Speaking Unofficially, Col. Langfitt Said He Was Much Impressed. Col. W. C. Langfitt, of the U. S. corps of engineers In charge of the Savannah River, was tendered an ele gant dinner last night at the Country Club. Dr. Howard T. Cree acted as toastmaster in his usual splendid manner and the occasion was a fine success. Ajnong the speakers were Mayor L. C. Hayne, Dr. M. Ashby •Jones, General Duvall, Mr. Nisbet Wingfield, Mr. Frank H. Barett and .Mr, C. Henry Cohen and Mr. T. W. Loyless. Colonel Langfitt on yesterday in spected the levee work, unofficially, and he declared last night that he was greatly impressed with the mag Mrs. Hood, Shot Accidentally By Brother-in-Law,Died Early Today After Investigation, Police Satisfied That Shooting Sunday Night on Upper Broad Street Was Unavoidable, One Pistol Bullet Made Wound in Leg and Abdomen. Peritonitis Caused. Mrs. Mary Hood, of 1 f.:: 7 Broad street, 23 years old, died at 6 o’clock this morning at tho city hospital of peritonitis from infection caused by a plated bullet wound in the abdomen. Mrs. Hood was accidentally shot Sun day night at her residence by her I rother-in-law, Walter Hood, accord ing to an unaltered statement she made before her death. So far as can be learned from authoritative sources the deceased never made ‘‘two con trary statements as to the manner in which the wounds were inflicted,” as stated this morning. Shot Only Once. Col. langfitt said that in his opinion the levee work was planned well and was being executed in an able manner, which statement, by the way, was a very pretty compliment to Mr. Nisbet Wingfield, city engineer and commis sioner of public works, for Mr. Wing field is the man who has had to do the greater portion of the planning and who is superintending the execu tion. Of course, what Colonel l.ang fitt said yesterday evening at the dinner was entirely unofficial. Army ofticers make official statements only in the nature of official reports to their superiors three wounds, one in the right leg and two in the stomach. The fact is Mrs. Hood was shot but once, the bullet en tering the right leg near the thigh, ranging for four inches, coming out and entering the abdominal cavity, where it lodged. The doctors were not allowed to probe for the bullet and no operation of any sort was permitted. No inquest or post 'mortem examination has been held. TAX COLLECTOR POPE, OF WILKES COUNTY, IS DEAD Was in Service of County For 16 Years; Had Withdrawn Name For Reelection Before Death, Washington, Ga. — M. A. Pope, for sixteen years tax collector of Wilkes County, died this morning at five o'clock, following an illness of two weeks. One week ago, he sent his card to a local newspaper announc ing his candidacy for another term to tax collector's office, hut evidently had premotlon that he would not get well and recalled his announcement before it was printed. He was 6,"> years old. a confederate veteran and is survived by his wife and four children, interment will be in City Cemetery Saturday at 11 o'clock. SPORTLETS ’T won’t he long before the populace will be busy swatting flies and the out fielders will be engaged in trapping them. Sort of a ‘tough season ahead for the flies, eh? If your young son is debating as to whether he'll be a dentist or a prize fighter when he grows up let him choose the latter job. Reach Cross is the rea son t(tr this advice. Reach, who fixes molars in New York's Hast Side when he isn’t decorat ing the optics of his lightweight I'vals, or removing their teeth without pliers, has just filled out his income tax blank. It calls for J2K.000 profit in ten months of fighting—and not a real, regular dol lar for ten months of dentistry. Rife has lost a lot of its ch.iVm for the students of that dear old Yale. Brick ley and his wonderful host still have another year of rusticating at that equally expensive and equally aged Harvard. Here is a new Mike Murphy story—a tale that shows the wonderful versltal ity of the great trainer in getting Ve su-ts from the athletes under him. Ted Meredith, the crack Pennsylvania runner, went stale on the eve of a big race. Murphy knew it —and knew there was only one way to get Meredity to overcome it. So Just as the runners we*e going to the tape, Murphy, who loved Meredity like a son, and knew him to be one of the gamest of athletes, called Ted to his side ands narled: "Ijook here, Meredith. You’re yellow —you’re a quitter. You’re going to quit in tills race—you’re going to luy down to this bunch—and I know It. I Just want to tell you in advance that I know it so you won't come to ine afterward with some phoney excuse. Now, you get away from me.** Meredith was amazed at first, then when the full Import of Murphy's de nunclatlon seeped into his brain he w’ent white with rage. His fists clench ed and he advanced toward Murphy. Hut just at that second the starter, finding Meredith absent from the line bawled to him, and it was ;* case of Meredith rushing over to the line that very sec ond or having the race start without with. “HI see you when I get through with this race,” snapped Meredith at Murphy as he ran to the line. Meredith never run a greater race In his life than he did that day. He simply ran away from the field. When lie crossed the finish line, he never stopped —just continued to run to where Mur phy was standing. He whirled up to tiio wonderful Irish trainer, ready to do battle for the insult, and found Mur phy with an outstretched hand, and a gyin on his face. “Fine work, Ted. my boy; fine wrtfk. fiorVy I had to call you names and get you mad, but you know, rny boy, If l hadn't you’d never have won the race. When a fellow’s rnus» les are gone and his condition poor he’ll often win If you make him mad. call him a quitter and tell him he rant win.’* And Meredith, Ids anger suddenly cooled, grinned, too and shook Mike’s hand. Why not send the Fngllsh militant suffragettes to Me»i< o? They’d be in their element—and the war soon would be over, for what army could withstand the onslaughts of thut band of fearless feminines? Thirty-one days more and then all the trlaJs. tribulations and sorrows we have suffered In these past five months will have skidded hence. Just thirty-one days more and then w f e’ll hear— “ He's out!*' And In rebuttal— " You’re a liar!” And as the crowd wends Its homeward way— *'£ome team we’ve got, hey? Rome team. Grabbed that f rst game easy. It s the pennant for us.” Or. perhaps it will be— “ They Just, threw that g.imp away the dubs I'll never spend another four bits to see that gang of bustiers never.” Only One “BROMO QUININE” To got the genuine, call for full name LAXATIVE BROMO QUININE Look for (signature of E.
