Wm. Johnson, rector of the t’hurch of the Hood Shep herd. officiating. The burial took place In the Mill cemetery, secret or ganization* participating. The de ceased wa* a popular member of the prominent order*. The Yaltbearr. * were Messrs. W. J. Holiinr*worth, H. R. Fund, B. P. Ma then.v? Dr. W. D. Jennings. Jr., O. W. Marshall, E. F. tlreneker, Charles Halite t.nd S. P. I.ewls. Most of whom are Knights Templar. In the demise of Dr. Smith the city ha* lost on: of It* truest friend*. The deceased was horn In Augusta, Ga.. January *, 1562. and had lived here all of his life Early In hi* life he studied medicine and graduated from the Au gusta Medical College. He hegnn hi* practice in West End, where at the time of his death he was proprietor of the drug store which bears his name. Dr. Smith, as a representative of the fifth ward, was a member of city council under Mayor Young and also under Mayor Allen. He was a member of the Richmond county board of education from this ward for about seventeen years. At the time of his death he was a member of the city white primary committee and also a member of the city hoard of personal ity assessors. Dr. Smith was a mem ber of the Mawm!. belonging to the Knights Templar and Shriners also, the Odd Fellows. Red Men, and Knights of Pythias. It was expected that these organizations would be largely represented at the funeral and that the ritualistic services would be deeply impressive. MRS. JOEI Slum IS TAKEN TO THE BEYOND Mother of ex-Superinte«dent ■Langley Mills Passed Away Last Night. Funeral Thursday A large number of people In this community mourn the death of Mrs. Luiretla Ellen Smith, wife of Mr. Joel Smith and mother of Mr. Arthur Smith, former superintendent of the Langley Manufacturing Company, which occur red at the residence, 1311 Fifteenth street, at 8:45 o’clock last night, after an Alness of several,,weeks. The funeral services will be held front the First Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, the pastor, Rev. Joseph R. Sevier, offici ating. The body will be shipped to Whltinsvllle, Mass., where the Inter ment will be made in the Pine Tree cemetery. ; Mrs. Smith was 77 years old. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. O. Henderson of Rockhill, S. C., and Mrs. W. T. Fields Of Sanford, Fla., and one sister, Mrs. Oscar F. Taft of Whltinsvllle, besides her husband and son. Mr. Arthur Smith Is now In Woodson, Mass. While a native of Providence. R. L the deceased had been a resident of Augusta for the past thirty-nine years and was one of the most highly es teemed women in the city. The an nouncement of her death, although not entirely unexpected, causes grief and sorrow to many friends who offer ev ery condolence to the bereaved fam ily. Following are the pall-bearers: Messrs. A. » Aiken Polo Team Whips Tigers; Score 7 to 6 Aiken, S. C.—Monday afternoon there was a good polo game between the Aikren leant and the Tigers, the former winning by a score of 7 to 6. The line up was as follows—Aiken: Martin, Wilson, Brown, Flelschman; Tigers; Post, Hopping. Fleischman, Phelps. With the weather Ideal, the ponies In good trim, and a large, crowd of spectators, the players did well and the game was very exciting. On Thursday the Aiken team, com posed of Brown, Paul, M. C. Flelsch matt and E. W. Hopping, will go to Camden to play for the southern cir cuit cups. The team Is expected to win and If they do the cups will be played for here next year. American Telephone and Telegraph Co. Against Government Ownership ‘New York. The rapid growth of the Bell system and Its attitude to ward government ownership are set forth today in the annual report of the American Telephone and Tele graph Co. President Theo N. Vail says the company Is opposed to gov ernment ownership because it is In terested in the upbuilding of a great public ultility and does not believe a government-owned telephone system would give as cheap and efficient ser vice. During the year the number of sub scribers' telephones increased to 8,- 133 017. The total wire mileage at the end of the year was 13.111,011 miles.
