EIGHT REAL ESTATE NEWS ■ as IF FIE MS The new building* that are being constructed in Au gusta have a more significant meaning than is apparent from a casual observation. The tearing down of old buildings and the construc tion of new ones is not an indication that the people of the community have developed an artistic temperament or a wish to have a beautiful object upon which to rest their eyes, but is founded upon a more substantial basis than a desire to please the eye or tickle the vanity. Cold blooded business men require better reasons than sentiment to induce them to furnish money to im prove a city. This reason they had when our city found itself handicapped with its former improvements, and there w*s a real, genuine demand for more offices, more hotel rooms, more post office boxes, clerks and carriers. Following the line of thought that there is a de mand for improvements, we naturally wish to know why that demand. The answer is very probably found in the words of a prominent citizen who recently said: "Many years ago Augusta was a sleepy town inhabited by mos quitos and moss backs, and it is very probable the moss backs would have been asleep instead of sleepy, but for the industry of the mosquitos; the moss backs ‘kept store’ and played checkers depending upon the farmers to to work and produce cotton, etc., to exchange for their dusty goods. "As years rolled on, however, the natural advantages Augusta has always possessed came to her rescue and in Small Truck, Poultry and Fruit Farm Hotp 111 your chance We have on the Owirgla Railroad. Dickey spite of her moss back citizens began to develop a city of factories, beautiful hotels, residences, etc. "As more years rolled on the moss backs became very scarce and their place was taken by live wide-awake men, and today we have one of the most popular winter resorts in the country, the most beautiful and healthful city in Georgia, and with the large amount of hydro electric power developed will soon be a truly great manu facturing city. Augusta's need now is more offices, ho tels, houses, etc., to take care of the people who want to come here.” The above statements are true, Augusta has developed a great deal already, but up to the present time she has been handicapped in various ways: Lack of offices, hotels, power, fear of freshets, etc., but all these troubles have been removed and a big development is above the hori zon, but far from its zenith The material development that has already came and greater development that is plainly in sight more than justifies the demand for the im provements now going on. Some may not realize it, but this is a new and ab solutely different era in Augusta's history; to those who have the intelligence to grasp this fact there are rich fields to be sown from which an abundant harvest will be reaped.
