THE TELEGRAPH
RITES TOO HIGH
Memphis is Favored Over Au
gusta By Telegraph Com
panies, Though This City is
Nearer to New York. M. &
M. to Take Matter Up.
That Memphis, Tonn., 1.157 mllea
from New York, can receive and send
telegrams to the Metropolis much
cheaper than Augusta, which city is
799 miles from New York, Is shown in
a \ery Interesting report submitted to
tin- I’nlted States senate by Postmas
ter General Burleson entitled "Govern
ment Ownership of Fleet rival Means of
Communication." Memphis pays 50
cents for a ten-word message and three
cents for each additional word, while
Augusta pays 60 cents for a ten-word
message and four cents for each ad
ditional word. Charleston Is also very
grossly discriminated against, so it is
alleged, for that city Is even closer to
New York than Augusta and yet pays
Just as high a rate. Savannah, which
is 845 miles from New York, enjoys
the same rate as Augusta.
The Merchants ami Manufacturers
Association will take the matter up
and find the reason why this city Is
discriminated against In favor of Mem
phis. It Is argued that there can be
no good reason why Memphis, nearly
400 miles further away from New York
than Augusta, should have a cheaper
rate to that city than Augusta, and It
is thus, shown that Memphis, as a cot
ton market, Is favorell over this city.
