gust 21. The city of Hamburg is fit
ting out an expedition at its own ex
pense, and Prussia will give assistance
to an expedition headed by Prof. Mle
the. nf the Technological Institute in
f’harlottenburg. A number of German
astronomers will attach themselves to
American expeditions. Prof. Miethe's
expedition, which will be chiefly for
the purpose of making photographs of
the eclipse, will go to the island of
Alston, far up on the coast of Nor
way, where the path of totality first
touches the European continent. The
Hamburg expedition will make Its ob
servations in Russia. It is understood
that the Ruslan astronomers are mak
ing extensive preparations for facil
itating the work of the American and
other expeditions by having the prop
er astronomical calculations worked
worked out for each Important point
in the path of totality.
NEW ELECTRIC TOWING
SYSTEM IS INSTALLED
Pari*. —A new and simple system of
electric towing has been installed with
great success on the canal from the
Marne to the Rhine near Nancy. Along
the banks a series of stout posts has
been placed fitted with rollers, over
which runs endless cables which, at
each end of the installation, pass round
a drum worked by electric motors.
The barges hitch their tow rope to the
cable by a special contrivance. Pro
longed trials have established that the
new method costs about fifty per
cent less than any other method tried
up to the present, and is, in addition,
much quicker. The great superiority
of th«. system consists in the ease in
which it -an be applied anywhere
without altering in any way the banks
of the canal or the type of barge used.
FRENCH ARMY WILL BE
GIVEN NEW FIELD GUNS

fitted with large shields protecting the
feeders from the enemy's fire.
The new gun clinches the French ar
tillery's slaim to he the finest in the
world In th opinion of several unpre
judiced military observers here.
