Cotton Satur day. Closed at Shade Off Best New York.—The local eld crop situa tion again appeared to be the dominat ing factor in tlie cotton market during today’s trading, and prices made new high ground for the movement with Match seding up to 1it.09 or 16 points t.et higher. The close was a shade off rim the best under realising but steady and from four to thirteen points above crtd.iv’s final figures. Private cables attributed the relatlve 1\ ease showing of Liverpool to Ks>pt ian Silling and it was also reported that Manchester's spinners using American cotton hud decided to close down thell mills during Easter week. News fn in the dry goods trade show ed no particular improvement but overn gilt advices from the South indi cated a continued steady spot situation and after opening steady at unchanged prices to an advunce of seven points the local market sold up on a rush of old cii p shorts to cover. According to es timates around the ring, purchuse of his than a thousand bales of March sent the price up from 12.93 at the close last night to above 13 cents this morn n.g and there was evidently very little March for sale. There was a good deal Ot scattered selling of May on a scale up trom 12.25 to 12.30, suppfvedly In the way of realizing and this he d the advance in check, hut on every dip the demand for shorts were sufficient to inspire rumors of continued rhervoue tiess. Forecasts for unsettled weather in the South with low temperatures In tlie western belt may have contributed somewhat to the upward movement us suggesting a further delay in new crop preparations. Final estimates place the Indian crop at 5,210,000 bales of 400- pounds, or an increase of 13 per cent over last year on an acreage 11.7 per cent greater. High. -Vow. Close. New Orleans, La.—Cotton displayed strength on the week-end session in the face of poor cables and considerable profit-taking by buyers of the earltei purl o: tlie week. The extremely cold weather in the West and possibilities ot a blizzard over Sunday were partly re sponsible for the upward movement ot prices while the continued large export movement created nervousness among shorts. Export clearances for the day out of Galveston alone were 29,285 bales against total exports from all United H.ates ports this day last year of 6,788 bales. it was pointed out that exports wtVe on tlie basis of over 9,4100,900 bales for the season. Broadly considered, conditions aVe nulet, although Indications of pro gress nre not wholly absent. There is no uniform trend toward improvement. "Expectations that the approach of spring would he accompanied by a revi val in Iron and steel have not been real ized and enlarged buying will soon be necessary to r*event curtailment of operations.
