Abram was sent to the pollee sta tion Sunday for investigation, the tie gro having been suspected of break ing the law. Until late last night the prisoner remained In Cell No 1 He attacked a prisoner In the cell with him without, cause and was re moved to a cell to himself, Cell No. 6. A window In this cell opens into a small lot where there la a great deal .if rubbish. The window Is barred, and screened with heavy wire, hut Abram made a hole In the wire screen sufficient to pull a piece of good sized wire Into the cell. New York.—All feeling of anxiety re garding the safety of Col. Theodore Roosevelt, who is In the Jungle In Rra7.il, has been removed by additional advices today from Anthony Fiala, whose party lost thpir equipment In the Rapids of the Devil in the Papa galo river. Fiala reported the colonel was In good health and was not with the party that met with the mishap. With another jiart of the expedition, Mr. Roosevelt is exploring the Rio Dluvlta, or River of Doubt, a hitherto unex plored stream. Fiala says Colonel Roosevelt will reach Manaos early In April, the point marking the end ol the expedition. From there the former president will slart for Madrid to attend the wedding of his son. Kermit. Fiala states that he lost two canoes loaded with food and equipment, but that his party of eight men were sale. The Collection. Chicago. Backus, before whom Shrank was tried, for the fire arm. Thought Judge Had Ruled He Wasn't a White Man Charleston, 8. C—Dr. H. A. El Kourle, of Birmingham, Ala., appear ed before Judge Smith in the United States district court this afternoon for a hearing concerning a decision ren dered by Judge Smith some weeks ago In refusing naturalization to a Sy rian. on the grounds that he was not a "free white man within the mean ing of the statute of 1790.” Dr. El Kourle labored tinder the im pression that Judge Smith had ruled that the Syrian is not a white man| His Impression was soon corrected. Syrians all over the country are in-* forested In this decision, which may he taken to the United States supreme court.
