that when Policeman Morgan opened

ment with which he could do harm to

was procured by reaching through a
window In the cell.

recently Into the Mojave desert and
the discovery of relics of fauna now
extinct la expected to shed light on
tht origin and evolution of life In
America were described today by Dr.
John Campbell Merrlsm, profeesor of
paleontology and historical geology of
the University of California.
The finding of pliocene fauna repre
senting a stage previously unknown
on this continent, was related by the
speaker. He also told of the discov
ery of upper mtoeene fauna, hitherto
unknown west of the Wasatch moun
tains and of evidence of the relat'on
of life In America to that of Asia In
the mloccne and pliocene periods.
