Announcement that HIV Thomas Upton* cup challenger Shamrock IV would bs equipped with a centerboard has renewed th* old controversy as to whether that feature of the modern yacht was an American or European Invention. An English authority summarizes as follows: "The centerboard was Invented or rather adapted, from some form of lee board by (’apt. Hchank of the British navy some time prior to 1771 Per haps It Is because Captain Hchank built a centerboard boat at Boston. Mass, In 1771 for Earl Percy, after wards Duke of Northcumberland, that ths centerboard has come to be regard ed as an American Invention. The il lustration of this boat is the oldest authentic record of the sliding keel. The sliding or lifting keel, or center board which Captain Hchank fitted to Earl Percy's boat was a long rectangu lar hoard which extended for about three-quarters of the length of the keel of the boat. In 1789 Captain Hchank Induced the admiralty to build a centerboard boat, or rather a small centerboard vessel, for she was a cut ter 60 feet long of 20 feet beatm a tiff six feet six inches draught of water. This craft was called the Trial. In stead of having one long board like the first boat built at Roston she had three centerboards, one amidships and one at each end. Popular in America. The centerboard which many years afterward became popular in America, and which. It Is truq has been much more closely associated with American yachting than British, was not shaped like Schank's Invention hut van tri angular below the water —that Is to say, stead of dropping equally fore and aft the board was pivoted to the fore end through the keel and the after end only was dropped, so that when the hoard was down It formed a triangle below water. This, then, Is the so called American centerboard. It was not however Invented by an American hut like the first centerboard, was the Invention of a Rrltlsh naval officer. “Paptain Shuldham, R. N., invented this centerboard In 1809 whilst he was a prisoner of war at Verdun, a fortress on the northeast frontier of France on the River Meuse. Captain Shuldham made a model of his centerboard while In prison and fitted It to a model boat which he also constructed and the plate was made of lead, which, of course, for the period was really ex traordinary. It scarcely differs from the centerboards of the present day. The Shamrock centerboard therefore can hardly claim to owe Its orlign to trans-Atlantic naval architecture.’’ After Shuldham. “After Shuldhajn’s invention in 1808 not much was done in the construction of centerboard boats for thirty or forty years but between 1840 and 1850 the Americans began building fast center board sloops, capslzable boats with BROAD ST. Mr*. Walter Harmon. 124* Broad Street. Augusta, *ays: "I had been having a lot of trouble with my back, and often It gave out com pletely. I couldn't even wash the dishes or tidy the house, 1 was so miserable. The pain bothered me at night and kept me awake a great deal. I often had dlxxy spells, and sometime* my sight was affected. I had read a lot about Doan's Kid ney Pills being a good kidney rem edy. and I got some from Frost's Pharmacy. I could tell that they were helping me right away, and I was soon rid of the aliments. Those who need a good kidney medicine should certainly take Doan's Kid ney Pills.” Spring Is Breaking; Backs Are Aching Backache is often the first sign of some form of kid ney disease that has been coming on for months. Look for the other signs;—lame back, sharp pains when stooping or lifting, dizzy spells, nervousness or despondency, with irregular, painful or distressing action of the kidneys; if these signs exist, decide that the kidneys need attention, ere the trouble turns to gravel, dropsy or Brights disease. Read this home testimony and then give Doan's Kid ney Pills a trial. AUGUSTA S CASES SELF-TOLD GLOVER ST. John C. Smith, 1435 Qlover Street, Augusta, says: “I am fully satisfied that there Is no other remedy on the market today as good as Doan's Kidney Pills for kidney complaint. 1 had this trouble for a long time, and It looked as if I was never going to get anything that would .cure me. I happened to hear of Doan's Kid ney Pills, and three boxes com pletely rid me of the ailments. I have never had any trouble since.” RUGHR FINE FOR WEAN KIDNEYS Mixed With Juniper Is Old Folks’ Recipe for Ologged Kidneys and Backache. Most folks forget that the kidneys, like the bowels, get sluggish and clog ged and need a flushing occasionally. { else we have backnrhe and dull misers in the kidney region, severe head aches. rheumatic twinges, torpid liver, arid stomaefl, sleeplessness and all sort* of bladder disorders, dizzy spells*spots before the eyes, frequent desire to urinate. Very shallow draught and when in 1851 the great victory of the schooner Am erica at Cowes —she was not a center board yacht but a model of a New York pilot boat attracted the attention ot English yachtsmen to the speed of the Yankee designs, the centerboard, which by that time had become popu lar In America, was talked about in England. ’’’The subsequent history of center board craft is fairly- well known As a type the centerboard in the United States has always been more favored than in British waters.” NOT SPOONING TO SIT IN GIRL’S LAP, JURY HINTS. Norristown, Pa. —Sitting on a girl’s lap is no sign that a young man Is "spooning," especially If he Is wearing white trousers and fears to soil them by sitting elsewhere. Such appears to he the substance of a verdict rendered by a jury here today. In Pennsburg, Policeman Harvey R. wood a few months ago came across two young girls sitting on the curb along the main street. In the lap of one sat a young man. On being in formed that "spooning" was not al lowed and that they would have to move on, they informed the policeman that they were not spooning, that the young man was sitting on the girl’s lap to avoid soiling his Immaculate white trousers. According to the policeman, they told him that if he was tired he might sit on the other girl's lap. When he attempted to accept the Invitation, he was repulsed, ftnd, it is charged, treated the girl roughly, hence his prosecution for assault and battery. The Jury found him guilty, but recom mended him to the mercy of the court. WEDNESDAY.
