“SPITEJUITS”
Change is Proposed in the
Laws of State to Protect
Reputable Business.
Atlanta, Ga A proposed change in
Georgia's laws, to better protect ref
utable business organisations against
the tiling oT "spite suits’ and other
unwarranted litigations by irresponsi
ble parties, will be taken up and con
sidered at the coming session of the
legislature.
It has been discovered Dial there
is a laxity in the w n sent Georgia
laws on the subject. Practically all
the northern and many of the west
ern states have already adopted meas
ures similar to the one proposed. The
idea has been commended by many
Georgia editors, hut it will be placed
in definite shape before the legisla
ture this year for the first time. That
some such change is needed Is uni
versal!.. admitted.
The change is briefly this: A law
to make it impossible to throw a
business concern into the hands of a
receiver, without the giving of an in
demnity bond by the petitioners, am
ply sufficient to cover all possible
damages in the event it is later snown
that the i recce-lings were unwar
ranted. It would prevent the wreck
ing of legitimate business concerns,
but would not be a fence behind whlci
weak or improperly managed organ
izations could hide.’
There are certain clnsses of busi
ness enterprises, for instance, life in
surance companies, which are partic
ularly sensitive to law suits, no mat
ter how irrespovible or unwarranted
the bringing of them might be.

daughter, came over after her. She
was determined not to go home. They
could do nothing with her. Finally.
Ed resorted to force and dragged Imr
up off the floor. She clung, scream
Ing. to tlie bannister rail and fought
him with all her might And he ai

ed her away liy main strength, and,
aided by his wife, half dragged and
half carried her home. Tile collide

the prosecution. The man. especially,

He said the whole family was in the
habit of trentlng the old mother-in-law
in the most inhuman way.
But the judge, after asking the
opinion of Captain Grubbs, Mr. Pil
cher, Mr Italy, nnd others, decided
that Ed deserved a good deal of credit
for trying to take care of the old
woman at all. It would require the
patience of Job to cope with tlio
whims oT the poor old soul forever
w'Vhout loss of temper. And he put
a suspended sentence of ninety days
on Kd. enjoining him not to treat her
cruelly again, and at the same time
commcndiug him for his charitable
desire to take care of her.
Then there was u barber shop dis

Walter, both colored. The ease, in
brief, was this: Claude, drunk, had
gone into a barber shop with a gui
tar. He played and danced Joyfully
until Walter, 111 play, grappled with
him. They wrestled for awhile un
til somebody lost his temper and
they began fighting. Walter pulled a
pistol, but It was taken away from
him before lie had time to fire.
Now, Walter had hired a lawyer for
tlie occasion of tills morning an I
Claude had not. Tlie lawyer asked
the judge to dismiss his client, as the
case had not caused any extensive
disorder and one man was as much
to blame as tlie other. In tact, he
pointed out, tlie other man, being
drunk, had been the cause of the trou
ble, and he 1 leaded that his client
would be sufficiently punished by the
twelve months he would receive in
the city court for carrying a gun with
out a license.
But the judge said no. lie want
