The well-known philosopher, Dr. Orison Sweet Marden In the April Is sue of Pictorial Review gives good reasons why the young woman of to day should develop some special bent or talent —he says: A little while ago when a girl was arrested in New York for vagrancy and was asked by a magistrate what caused her to drift Into that sort of a life, she said: “I wanted to dress like other girls, and I couldn't." How dif ferent might have been this young wo man's career had she been reared to appreciate the advantage of having a worthy aim in life, and had been arous ed to the Joys that come from doing her oart in the world’s work. There is no glow of satisfaction which comes to a human being like that which Is produced by stretching the mind over our life problems and solving them ourselves instead of hav ing some one else solve them for us. The consciousness that we are doing something In the world worth while, that we are taking our places like real men and real women. Is the only thing that makes life worth living. \Ve mav manage to get through the world without helping ourselves, with out doing anything for others, hut we can't manage to do this and be a real woman. We can’t manage to shirk our part of the world's work, when we are perfectly able to do It, and be anything but a dwarf a scrub oak of a human being; we can't do it and he a happy man or a happy woman. There are thousands of able-bodied girls, many of them collegfe graduates, who lead a useless existence because they have not found their places in life, they have not felt the pressure of great life purpose. Although they are educated and fitted to serve mankind, 98c WANT TO BE DUPED BY SUPPOSED REDUCTIONS WE CAN’T SERVE YOU SATISFACTORILY they have not developed any special bent or talent. It often happens that these girls belong to families of mod erate means, and they drift along for years without marrying, and finally become a burden to themselves, their relatives, o- their community, and are demoralizing to the real producers. UNCOVERED EARS PRETTY. Now that ears are coming into fash ionagain, you can he quite sure that Just as soon as the majority of ears have emerged from the whirl of hair that has concealed them from view for a long time, there will he talk of car beauty, and it is well to begin in time to make the ears as perfect as pos sible. During the interim when ears have been Insignificant, never-to-be consid ered hits of anatomy, they heve been slept upon and crumpled up, the lobes frequently pulled out of their natural ly dainty shape with heavy earrings. From now on the women of discreet and proper vanity will see to it that her ears are in place when she sleeps. will gently massage a hit of cold cream Into the rim of the ear each night, for the perfect ear Is of an at tractive pinkness and delicacy. For the woman who uses powder and and a hit of rouge, the ear should not be forgotten in her art work. Dust a hit of powder carefully over the ear and touch the lobe with a faint dash of the rouge if it is to harmonize with the well-done complexion. CULTURE. Vogue says: Culture implies the fitting of the In ner man or woman for the apt and sensitive perception of what is good, true, and beautiful in all the fine arts, In nature, morals, religion and in whatever else may minister to the sweetening and ennobling of the spirit. In Its development It places man in sympathy with the best thought of man in all ages, and enables him to enjoy alike the splendors of that llter ture which has stirred the world to Its depths, and'the minute perfection of form lna fable of La Fontaine or a parody of Calverley, True culture brings what is best In music, painting, and sculptors within one's apprecia tive grasp, gle es a discriminating taste in manners, and refines the percep tions and the emotions. All this comes of deliberate or sometimes unconscious , feeding upon that which yields the in tellectual and spiritual nourishment which one Is at any given moment ready to assimilate, and nothing is more inimical to true culture than the intellectual and spiritual indigestion | so often superinduced by the 111 chosen feast spread by schools and lecture courses. In other words, culture Is for him who knows where to seek his own, something to he recognized largely by the fact of enjoyment, and belongs to him who acquires with the rolling years catholicity of taste and Its co relative, charity of spirit. The woeful waste and disappointment Involved in seeking culture after a misdirected fashion are enough to grieve the hearts of all who love their kind.
