Realizing Checked Advance and
N. Y. Cotton Closed at Net
Advance 3 to 9 Points.
New York. —Old crop shorts renewed
covering in cotton today and May con
tracts sold lip to 12.25 or 11 points above
last night's closing figures. Realizing
checked the advance and caused slight
reactions with the close barely steady
at a net advance of 3 to 9 points.
Orcnei! steady at an advance of four
to' ntrP points on higher Liverpool ca
ble reporis of more active trade In
Manchester and bullish Southern spot
advices rumors that spinners might take
up cotton out of the local stock may
have stimulated demand for near posi
tions.
There was some scattering liquidation
of March which lost two to tbrgb joints,
In its recent premium, while the new
ciop was relatively quiet and failed
fully (o follow the old crop advance al
though there were continued reports of
unsettled weather. Private cables at
tributed firmness In Liverpool to spin
ners calling and covering by near month
shorts. Reports from Kail Ri\w indi
cated increased sales of prim cloths, the
business being estimated at 370.0U0
pieces for tlie week against 75,000 last
year. II was estimated that mills were
operating within 70,000 pierces of their
capacity which is the best showing so
fer this season.

WEEK IN*COTTON
New York. —The cotton market has
been more or loss unsettled during the
pant week. The old crop covering
movement which began early In the
month sent May contracts up to 12.31
on Monday, or practically 14 per bale
above the low record established on
March 9th. At this level, however, the
demand became less urgent and prices
since have reacted several points under
realising or the opinions of reactionists.
March contracts have maintained a
premium of about 80 points over May.
but at that difference leading spot
bouse brokers have supplied the de
mand, nnd since the May buying move
ment tapered off the premium on that
position over July has narrowed from
about 3ft to 17 points at the close of
business tonight.
According to local gossip the straddle
short Interest In May contracts now has
been materially reduced, and while It is
supposed that the comt.lned straddle
nnd hedge Interest In May and July Is
still a large one, some traders now are
predicting that future demand from that
source avlli he less active, and more
likelv to show Itself on declines than to
follow the market up on advances. In
the hope of an easier spot situation with
the advance of the planting season.
Not much news has reached here from
Southern snot markets during the week,
but there have been sales of retentions
from the local stock, and private wires
hive reported a good demand, particu
larly for low grades while local opera
tors who watch the trading closely
cta'm to have seen no Indication of
sales here against supplies remaining in
the Interior.
Recent cshles h-om Idvernool report
an Imm-oved bus ness In Manchester
nnd whde there has been more ta'k of
short time In domestic mill circles the
more seasonable weather of the past two
or three da vs i« *-.|d to have stimu
lated ilg demand for goods.

FIRM TONE AT
CLOSE IN N. 0.
Continued Rains and Big Eng
lish Mill Business Market
Factors Saturday.
New Orleans. —Continued rains over
tlie South and no prospects of chanp-3
for Sunday, reports of a large Knglisd
mill business ami an increased inquiry
for Liverpool spots, today gave cotton
a firm undertone on the week-end ses
sion, and it rinsed unchanged t«* a net
advance of seven points In the face of
considerable profit-taking on the traders
who went long on depressions of Ihe
earlier part of the week.
Opening at the advance, the market
soon went five to ten points over yes
terday’s close. Tills was the high of
tlie day except on March, which while
not active, twice went 15 points over
yesterday’s last quotation. While much
of the buying was for the account of
shorts who wanted to cover over Sun
day, commission houses did some busi
ness on the long side for outsiders.

BIG SELLING AS
STOCKS DECLINE
Week End Covering. However,
Caused Late Rally Saturday
in Wall Street.
New York. Decline In Stocks which
had proceeded steadily though slowly,
Klnce the first ot the week, bringing no
Increase of buying ns uuotnllons re
ceded, encouraged heavier speculative
selling today. Long traders disheart
ened by constant Injection of new bear
ish factors and by lack of outside sup
port, wore In no mood to resist raiding
efforts. For a time selling was carried
on with a fair degree of activity. Shorts
aimed chiefly at the steel groups. Unit
ed States Steel gave way easily and In
dependents sagged with it. larsses In
general lumevry were not severe. Week
end covering caused a late raltv.
Railroad statements submitted today
were unfavorable, Canadian Pacific re
ported a decrease of more than 21,000,-
000 in February net earnings. Frie s
operating income wan reduced from
1970,000 in February. 1913 to 8216.000
last month. New York Central report
ed a policy of retrenchment as rigid as
Pennsylvania's.
Time money rates were easier today
on recent Inflow of money and slack de
mand. That was interpreted ns an In
dication of unsatisfactory business con
ditions. The week's bank statement,
however, failed to allow the expected
further.gain in cash.
Bonds easy. Total sales 3*00,000.
U. S. bonds unchanged on call on the

WEEKJN_ TRADE
New York. -Bradstreet's today says:
"Retail trade expands where bright
warm weather prevails, and Jobbers feel
some of this In re-orders for the l»te
spring season; but wholesale trade. In
dustry and new financial operations go
forward haltingly.
"Distant buying Is held in check by
conservatism, producers of steel need
orders to maintain operations; financial
Interests fS-oceed cautiously In the mat

thaw, restrict interior movement; indus
trial lines at a whole are not doing bet

ate operating at only half speed, the
whole Investing the situation In this re
