“J. Willie Levy’s” To Celebrate
Sixty-Fifth Anniversary
In thin day of change and coins Into
I different businesses, it I* refreshing tu
hear of a firm that has done business
successfully for slxty-flve yearn. Thin
doubtful distinction Is being enjoyed
by the J. Willie Levy firm of clothiers
and haberdasher)'. Older residents of
Augusta can remember when the firm
was first started by the present own
er's father, It Is quite a question of
ancient history.
Half a century or more ago, Au
gusta bore to Hamburg the relative
i position that Hamburg now bears to
| Augusta. All the business was done
| in Hamburg. It was the biggest cotton
J market in this vicinity, and as a shop
, ping place It was the place of places
j for the nearby territory of the two
states. It was when it wns enjoying
this glory, Just sixty-five years ago
this April, that Abram Levy, one of
Augusta's best known and most rep
resentative citizens, first established
what was then known as the House of
Levy, a clothing store. Later as Ham
burg decreased in importance, and the
business moved over to Augusta. Mr.
, Levy moved his store here, and ever
since the House of Levy, now known
as ,1. Willie Levy's, has been one of
the best known and most popular bus
iness houses in Augusta, and after
sixty-five years of splendid service to
Its customers. Its anniversary will he
l celebrated this week.
Women and the News
Women always figure rather large
ly in the news of the day. but it was
to E-mile at the curious mixture offer
ed iu a single day awhile ago.
* * «>
There was the half-tragic, half
comic and wholly absurd predicament
oi two prominent women, both hearti
ly in tune with America and its tra
ditions, both born on American soil,
both independent of thought and con
victions, —hut both aliens, according to
a strange law of nations.
Mrs. Ernest Thompson Seton Is a
native of California, but her author
naturalist husband is a British sub
ject, having been born on Canadian
soil and never having sought citizen
ship here. Not being counted an In
dividual but rather one with her hus
band, she is regarded as a British sub
ject; and so upon her recent return
from abroad she found herself rated
as an alien, subject to the alien immi
gration laws and liable to the tax up
on all aliens entering the country. Not
often would one wish herself a man,
but, dreary me! there aro times and
places when realization comes that it
is quite a royal favor to be given tha
right to sit about the family hearth
stone of benign Uncle Sam.
Out in her native Colorado Mrs.
Herman Pauli has grown to regard
herself quite a citizen, but her mar
riage to hn unnaturalized foreigner
has made her an alien. She feels her
loss of citizenship rather much, and
dreams beautiful dreams of a time
when the absurd ruling may bo reme
died. Meanwhile she and Mrs. Seton
are sailing in the same alien boat with
Mrs. Harriot Stanton Rlatch and Mrs,
Inez Milhelland Boissevain. Some
folk may count the sailing pleasant,
but not those who hold their country
dear. For a woman would be none
the less loyal to her husband because
of retaining as her own the country
of her birth.
• • ■
And across the page is a letter from
Jane Addams, earnestly advocating
reprieve for Leo Frank, a man con
demned for the brutal murder of Mary
Phagan. The letter calls upon the
club women of Georgia to work for
a reprieve on the ground that the exe
cution is so desperately Irrevocable
thta nothing justifies It but the most
unequivocal and downright evidence.
With much room to doubt as to the
man's grullt she asks the women to
protest against his execution.
Apparently no sex antagonism there.
• * *
Then comes the report of a bread -
making contest undertaken as proof
that "home-lcving hearts" and bread
making women may cherish a per
fectly legitimate ambition for the
vote!
And the assurance that the much
abused craze for the tango gown is
driving silk mills of the country at
topmost speed and that the busy spin
dles and looms turning out fascinat
ing silks for tango teas and dances
and dinners are helping to spread a
note of prosperity all over the coun
try. And so much for m.v tango lady,
who must dance In a silken gown!
Quite a factor, after all, is she not,
along yvith the tariff and a few other
things that affect the hum of busi
ness?

SOCIETY NEWS
t’sually the celebration of an anni
versary is done by doing something
lhat will udd In some way to the one
who celebrates, but this will be dif
ferent. J. Willie Levy will give his
customers the benefit of this by hav
ing a grand Spring Sale, and the goods
that he will display will be absolutely
new, simply a case of getting things
at a remarkable reduction. Not be
cause they are ship worn, but because
it Is a season of rejoicing over the
popularity and success which has ever
attended this firm. There will be a
reduction on all ladles, men's and
i hiblren s clothes. Every suit Is to he
marked down, and even' article along
haberdashery lines is also to be cut In
price for one week, beginning tomor
row, Monday.
And the pretty things at J, Willie
Levy'* will coax the dollars from the
tightest of purses. Levy’s suits are so
new and so stylish. There Is nothing
like them in the city, nor are they even
remotely like each other, and they are
quite the smartest that are shown in
any of the swellest houses north. Not
only does Levy carry all the latest
cuts in spring und summer suits, but
there are so many little accessories
that the well dressed woman needs,
extra coats, buses, etc., that Levy only
can show you.
Don't fail to call at Levy’s this
week.
And for a look at the contrasts go
ing on just among women, there's the
spectacular story of Madame Calllaux,
whose experience as an assassin is
very much softened by the attentions
and favors showered upon her at the
Paris prison and there are the women
convicts complaining of the discrimi
nation. For the one ,a cell transformed
into a drawing room, and privileges
galore; for the others. Isolated cells
us punishment for their complaints.
And for another Madame Somebody
who murdered her husband and who
likewise complained of the difference,
a transfer to a heated cell all her
own and the privilege of a maid to
serve her.
m * •
Next comes a speaker who tells
mothers and the rest of\the world that
It is all a mistake to place a doll in
the hands of a smalirmaid, emphasiz
ing and developing the ''ltttle mother"
side of her nature, rather than the
side which tends toward the humani
ties, for the development of life comes
through human endeavor, and the rest
will certainly take car© of itself.
And as to divorces and applications
for divorces —-but they do not count,
for though women generally furnish
the spectacular side of the story, there
are the men who make up the back
ground.

Some making merry with tangoing
and posing for pictures, some waging
war on the filth and dirt and unsani
tary conditions of the city, hut always
a woman W'hereever one looks and al
ways something quite different.
Well, If this is a man made world,
women are surely beginning to emerge
from their hiding and to make quite
a stir.
