THE AUGUSTA HERALD. AUGUSTA. GA.
GOV. SLATON IS
NOT TO RESIGN
Says He Will Remain Georgia's
Executive Until After Pri
mary of August 19th.
Governor Slaton, who has announced
thnt he would he a candidate for
the unexpired term of the Iste Sen
ator Bacon, will not resign the gov
ernor's office until after the primary
elections on August 19.
Governor Slaton made this very
clear Monday He sold: "I waa
elected governor for a two-year term
by the people, and when I resign It
will be by the authority and command
of the people themselves If the people
In the primary record It as their will
that I shall leave the governorship
and represent them In the United
Slates senate then, of course, I will re
sign, and In doing so I will obey the
mandate of the people. I would not
feel authorized to resign the governor
ship until I had consulted tho people.
They elected me to the governorship
and It- Is for them to say whether 1
shall he promoted to the senate
"Hy the time the primary la held the
legislature will have adjourned, and
the period between then and the Inau
guration of a new governor w|l lot an
Interregnum, so to speak. I will have
accomplished all I can accomplish, as
there will be no more sessions of the
general assembly during my term of
office."
Although th# governor did not so
state, it Is believed that In the event
he Is nominated for the United States
senate In the primary he will resign
the governorship about September 80,
and should hts candidacy be unsuc
cessful be will not resign at a'l.
Should th* governor wait until after
October 7, the date of the general
state election* to resign It would be
necessary to call a special session of
the new legislature—-which will be
nominated at the August primary and
ratified In th# October elections —to
chons* a new president of the senate
In order that an acting governor may
be provided.
Section S4«l of the state constitu
tion, under the heading “Term of Mem
bers of: the General Assembly” pro
vides "The members of tbe general as
sembly shall be elected for two years
und shall serve until their successors
lire elected.” . •
On October 7th.
The successors to the members of
the present general assembly will be
elected on Octotier 7. After that date
should it he necessary to call a special
session of the legislature the newly
elected members would be called to
gether,
Thus stands that If Governor Slaton
waited until after October 7 to resign
there would be no president of the
senate to act as governor and a spe
cial session of the legislature would
be neces-ary to choose one.
In such event not only would a
heavy expense he Incurred by the state,
but J. Randolph Anderson, of Savan
nah. now president of the senate, and
prospective candidate for governor,
would be denied the opportunity to
serve out Oovernor Slaton’s term,
which expires In June, 1915.
Governor Slaton is the fourth candi
date to enter the lists for Senator Ba
con's unexplred tet-m. The three others
who have already announced are: Con
gressman T. W. Hardwick, Attorney
General Thomas SL Felder and John R.
