M. Rowe Found in Atlanta Elevator Shaft. Love Letters in Aged Man’s Pocket Atlanta, Ga. —The baffling death mystery surrounding the discovery Thursday of the decomposed body of a white man named J. M. Rowe in the bottom of the freight elevator shatt of the Emery-Steiner Building on the Ptaciitrce viaduct continued to puzzle city detectives who are .working ou thecase. [.ate Thursday afternoon Chief of Police .lames 1.. Beavers and Detec tive Butler visited the basement of the building and made a thorough search of the elevator shaft, flndirN the missing hat of the dead man part ly submerged under debris in the bot tom of the shaft. Close by the hat was found a bloody bludgeon, which was about three feet in length and the size in thickness of a 2xl timber. Coated With Blood. At one end of the bludgeon was a nail, and this end of the bludgeon and the nail were coated with blood Close by the weapon was found an empty half-pint corn whiskey bottle. Marks on the dead man’s body ad vanced the theory that probably Rowe had been murdered on one of the floors above, either the second or third, and thrown into the elevator shaft. There was a hole in the back or his neck, which was probably made cither by a bullet or the nail in the end of Hip bludgeon. The dead man’s head was cut very <b ep on one side, and the left side of his face and his left shoulder horribly bruised. His neck was evidently Irok-’n. Rowe appears to be a man about 60 y ears of age. From some papers on his : erson his identity was establish ed. Severll letters were also found in his pockets. ( Discovers Body. The body was discovered about 10 o’clock by Sam Phillips, the negro janitor and freight elevator boy. Phil lips bad lowered the elevator to the I aseinent and had stepped out of it to make some adjustment of the cables. He ran the elevator up a few feet in order to step underneath it to arrange the cables. As he stepped down Into the bottom of the shaft, which is a few feet below the level of the base ment, he say the face of a white man directly underneath his foot. Horri fied, he quickly drew his foot hack and ran out and called up the police. The theory that the man had wan dered into the elevator shaft in a drunken state and fallen to sleep was dropped when the negro elevator boy declared that the freight elevator nev er touched the bottom of the pit, which is about three feet below the level of the basement floor. He fur ther declared that the entrance to the basement from underneath the Peachtree viaduct was always fasten ed by a lock, and that no one could enter the basement from the ground lloor. This left only two theories for the detectives to work upon. That the man had fallen either from the sec ond or third floors of the building into the elevator shaft, or was murdered and thrown into the shaft. Love Tangle Revealed. By the discovery of personal letters addressed to Rowp, and a perusal of their contents, a thrilling love tangle was disclosed by the tragedy. Two of the love Jotters are signed ‘‘Your Irv ing Wife," and were written in March trom l.anette, Ala. A third was written from Oaines ville, (ia.. dated October 11. 1911, and is signed hv “Minnie Knight.” Each letter disclosed a story of undying devotion and love for Rove. All the letters wer addressed to Rowe at Eawrenceville. Ga., and these with other papers addressed the same have led the police to believe that J.awrnceville is the home of the dead man.
