Scene From “Damaged Go ods,” at the Grand April 28
At The Grand
"TRAFFIC IN SOULS.”
The Universal Film Manufacturing
Company tins the (llatlnclion of being
the first moving picture company In
the world to produce a feature dra
ma so aiicceesfully ns to appeal to
one of the great American publishing
firm . On Tuesday, December lf>th,
the George W. Dillingham Company
of No. Hi Hast 22nd Street, New
York, sent their representative bo Mr.
iJtemule, president of the Universal,
and closed contracts for the novell/.a
tlon of the “Traffic. In Souls.” which
has caused the biggest sensation ot
any moving picture play ever produc
ed In America. This is the first time
In the history of literature that a
novel has been founded on the origi
nal cinematographic drama.. Every
moving picture company in Hie coun
try has been going through literature
with a fine-toothed ronth to dramatize
novels and during the lust year sev
eral new feature companies have been
organised for the billing of successful
stage dratnaß. However, with this
one turn of Hie wheel, the Universal
has scored another triumph, and
changed the entire aspect of motion
picture work.
The Traffic In Souls” Is not an
appeal to purlency and lascivious
taste, hut is a profound moral lesson
and Its presentation In a dignified
novel of which the advance orders
have already amounted to many thou
sands from the hook trade and the
public in general will create as much
of a sensation In the publishing world
as the play has done with patrons of
the theater.
The author of the novel Is Eustace
Dale Dali, a well-known novelist,
short-story and magazine article writ
er Me ts the author of a number of
books Including a recent treatise on
the technique of moving pictures call
ed “The Art of the Photoplay. Mr.

will take its place among the other
famous dramas and comedies which
have been published by the Dilliug
lmm Company, such as "The Easiest
Wav" "The Fount of Luxembourg.
••The Lion and the Mouse,
Third Degree,” "The Lure, and other
successful productions.
This thrilling protp-dratna will m

“ADELE" A GREAT SUCCESS.
"Adele," the delightful French ope
retta, which had a most successful
HroH(iwa.\ run and which has rtiade a
decided hit on its present tour will
he seen at the Grand Wednesday.
April 22d. The New Orleans Item,
in speaking of the attraction Had the
following to say:
Fresh and fragrant as a rose of
“Adele," the beautiful operetta which
delighted a big audience at the Tu
lune Theater Sunday night. It is by
the authors of “Ermonie" and “Al
ma, Where I)o You Dive?” and It has
slightly taken a place among tfie
most distinctive musical productions
of the decade.
When “Ailele" was sung for the
first time in New York it proved a
delightful surprise. It was put on
without heralding or ado, hut the New
York newspapers were unanimous in
declaring It one of the most charm
ing pieces of the last quarter of a
century. That this praise was de
served and was not obtained through
ctinning of press agents was the ver
dict of those Orleanians who saw it
Sundnv night.
A French farce probably furnished
the basis for the piece and there were
no doubt risque situations in the
original, hut in the musical version
the authors have veered off every
time precipice was near. The result
is pure, wholesome, entertainment
with plenty of breeziness in it.
Splendidly Staged.
The operetta is splendidly staged.
One of the scenes laid in southern
Italy, or it should bo if it isn’t, re
veals through open windows a sug
gested moon behind elouds rneing
over moonlit waters o Ta rippling hay.
It Is all in good taste, and is a nfark
ed contrast to the riot of noisy vul
garity. which recently lingered a week
in New Orleans.
“Adele" tells an interesting coher
ent story which could stand on Its
feet without music But there are 22
songs, all of them sweet and tuneful,
and nil links in a chain of melody.
