MAJOR LEAGUE CLUBS OF ORGANIZED
BASEBALL OPENED SEASON YESTERDAY
Began the Business of Cavorting on the Various Greens in
Regular Fashion While Something Like 176,000 Fana
tics Alternately Ate Peanuts and Shouted Their Greet
ings to Players.
(By Frank G. Menke.)
New York. —While something like
175,000 fanatics alternately ate pea
nuts and shouted their greetings, the
major league clubs of organized base
bal lifted the cover from the 1014
season and began the business of ca
vorting on the various greens in regu
lar fashion yesterday.
It was a gala day for baseball and
also for the fans Fandom showed
how eager it was to get a glimpse of
the big leaguers in their opening bat
tles of the season by fighting among
themselves hours before the game
Blurted for choice seats from which to
watch the doings of the athletes.
A capacity crowd at each of the
parks was indicated by the early sale
of tickets, and in some cities it seem
ed certain long before the game began
that many of the late-coining fans
would be turned away because of lack
of room for their accommodation.
Giants.
In the National League the Giants
were hilled to open at Philadelphia,
the Boston Braves displayed their
wares in Brooklyn, the Pirates were to
meet in a head-on collision with tin-
Cardinals in the Missouri city, and the
Cubs tackled Charley Herzog's Ked in
the Redleg town.
The world champion Athletics open
ed with the Yankees at the Polo
Grounds, the Senators grappled with
the -Red Sox in the Hub city, the Naps
were billed to open with the White
Sox in Chicago and the Browns and
Tigers were scheduled to settle their
first argument of the season in the
Miflligan- city.
There was considerable speculation
as to the outcome of the Giant-Phil
lie battle. The two were bitter ene
mas last year, and seemed for a time
ai out evenly matched. But this year
the Phillies, raided by the Feds, have
sent into action a line-up that seem
ed somewhat strange to the fans, ami
which on paper seemed weaker than
last year’s combination. But Charley
Pooln, the red-headed manager has
come to the fore with the remark that
"despite the loss of several of our best
men we are as strong as we were last
year, and we'll furnish a few sur
prises.”
Human Factors in Good Service
THERE are three parties to each telephone connection—the
party who calls, the trained operator, and the party who
answers.
The telephone user shares with the operator the responsi
bility for good service.
Accuracy in calling, promptness in answering, clear and de
liberate talking and patience on the part of the user and the
operator, are essentials of good service.
In making 26,000,000 calls daily, millions of telephone
users become integral parts in the Bell system and contribute
to the success of the service.
U y
The Yankee line-tip for the opening
game this year nnd the 1913 opener,
was just about as different as day ami
night. Only one man outside a catch
er and three pitchers remains of the
1913 Yankee team, and Chance in sic.
Ing his new-combination at the Ath
letics, was confident that it would
prove a stumbling block to the Phil
adelphia boys, whose victories over
tlic Yankees last year greatly aided
them in their fight for the pennant.
The Boston Braves looked upon as
tlie dark horses in the National Lea
gue battle, sized up today as one of
the best aggregations that ever fought
tinder the Braves' banners. The ad
dition of the peppery Evers has added
about DO per cent to the strength of
the team, and with the pitching staff
in good shape, it looked today as if
the Braves would "blow” themselves
to a nice little start and that they
would furnish trouble all the way.v>
Senators Look Good.
The Senators looked mighty good
wln-n they lined up for battle today.
With Johnson still in his old form
with two of Griffith's young twirlers
giving promise of being aide to help
out the Speed King, and with the out
field and infield intact, the hoys from
Washington look like formidable foes.
The Naps didn't look overly husky
when they prepared for their
first clash of the season. Of course
the slugging pair, Jackson and La
joie, were among those present, and
with batting orbs undinuned, but the
loss of Falkenherg, the Naps’ pitching
mainstay last season, and the fact that
Chapman the shortstop who broke an
ankle some weeks ago, won’t he able
to get into the game for another
month, seemed to take away about 20
per cent of the club's strength.
