My wife haa also frequently used

HUM WITH THE RECORDER
Susanna Campbell is an heiress
She has got $5.20 in her bank, enougn
to pay her way home with sti cents
extra. But this morning it seemed
such a pity to spend all this hard col
luded money for au old Kailroad
ticket to enable Susanna to plant her
selt penniless on her family in Dil
lon. that Mr. L>on Martin was ap
proached Tor a Pauper's ticket to
Dillon. This he very kindly granted,
after hearing all the particular*, so
that Susanna is now the possessor of
$5.20 over and above a ticket home
You may say that was greedy, or even
that your money was obtained under
talse pretenses Granted. Charity
covers a multitude of sins is the reply,
fe’urely you don’t care, if you gave
her ten cents, what she spends it on,
do you? The children need clothes
no doubt. And she needs eye-medi
cnie.
Her release was signed by numbers
of high officials this morning and the
Black Maria is going to bring her
back trom the stockade at 1 o ciock,
after it has taken up today's batch of
prisoners. The Doctor says her eyes
are much better for a little Carbolic
and warm water, and Superintendent
Gay says she is the very best worker
he has. He has never heard a word
of complaint front her, and, in laet,
be says, you’d never kr»w s'ie was
there. He had told her nothing of
which were being made to
gee her back home, so that it might
come by way of a surprise. She will
be at home tonight it the trains are
right. Thanks to very many kind
people. It was gratifying to notice
how many colored people came for
ward with nickels, dimes and one man
with a quarter. Nobody yet knows

Tliis morning came up Rosa Mc-
Gahee, backed up by Laura Calloway,
both colored, charged with disorder.
Rosa was said to have stabbed
Aieen, a witness, because Aleen had
charged Iter with sniffling cocaine.
Aleen had said:
“You look a whole lot better since
you quit using Koke.” This impli
cation was resented with tooth, nai.,
bludgeons and keen steel. Aleen ex
plained her statement thus:
"Rosa and her mother been lookin'
after my baby. The other day 1 seen
de baby take a piece of paper an I
tear it up right small, in little bit o’
pieces, and put ent up to his nose and
sniff — iiks he van sniffin’ cocaine.
And lie ain’t 2 years old! Jedge. you
know he must a seen somebody uo
it.”
Rosa’s mother burst in:
“We ain’t used no cocaine! Don’t
know nothin’ ’bout no sniffin'.”
The Judge said lie could not stop
to pass on the marvels of this prod
igious child, but suggested that they
tell him something about the fight.
Aleen was made to disclose the
place of her neck where the knife had
penetrated, and, from the statements
of all the witnesses, though confused
and incoherent, Rosa was taken to
have done the damage. Laura, the
other defendant, was of a surpassing
innocence, which she protested by
word and shrug till she was finally
dismissed. She Had simply tried to
part the contestants, being a great
firend of Rosa's.
Rosa got a sentence of $25 or fifty
days, with a bond to the city court
for stabbing, and the others wended
their ways out. But Laura, her
iriond. lingered, and as Rosa passed
bv her on the way to the guard room,
