APRIL 19. h ago Business Men Treated io Old i ashioned Georgia Barbecue Was Held at Carmichael’s Yesterday Afternoon and Was a Very Enjoyable Affair—Some Very Interesting Talks Made By Members of the Party. Not until after the Chicago trade extension l»arty had reached Augusta, In their two weeks' tour over the prin cipal Southeastern states, were they treated to a real barbecue, which they said they enjoyed better thuu anything on their trip. It was a real, genuine Georgia ‘cue, at Carmichael’s yesterday, and It was actually the first some of the Chica goans had ever been treated to. They will never forget It. Some declared that at each u 'cue one could not con centrate his mind on business or even golf, but only on the "good things to eat." Mr. Hurry Barnes, who super intended the preparation of the bar becue, is to be highly complimented. Place Crowded. The screened enclosure, seating some three hundred peopfe, wus .rowded, the mujorlty of the number being at tendants on the cotton clerks' 'cue, whle happened' to be given at the same time as that arranged for the Chicago business men. After Justice had been done the 'cue, Mr. Wm. H. Barrett, acting as toast master, called on Mayor L. C. Hayne to welcome the guests. This was done by the city's chief executive In a few well chosen words. Mr. Barrett then <-ailed on Mr. Gore, who heads the delegation, to speak for the visitors. Mr. Gore Spoke. Mr. Gore, while not going into any great length, spoke in the most ex cellent terms or the South, its advan tages, what it offered and last but not least why it should be more closely associated with the North and Middle- West for the ultimate advancement qi all sections united. Mr. T. W. Loy less spoke of how glad Augusta was to have with her the representatives of Chicago's trade association. He said that now since alterations had been made on the Georgia Railroad’s schedule between here and Atlanta and Chicago was put within :1s hours and 10 minutes of Augusta, the visitors should feel that they are nearer this city than before. He invited them to send their money down her for investments. Mr. Shoop Spoke. Following Mr. Loyless. Mr. John D. Shoop, assistant superintendent of Chicago's school, representing the edu cational feature of the tour, in con junction w-ith Mr. J. Spencer Dicker son, University of Chicago, and Mr. Glenn Frank, Northwestern University, delivered one of the best and sound est speeches, appropriate of the pur poses of the Chicago party's trip, that has ever been heard in Augusta. He was, during his discourse, applauded several times and also heartily ap plauded at the end. He followed up in a way what Mr. Gore had said, viz: that the North and South should join hands in a friendly relation and each work for the betterment of the other. He' pictured the South and particu larly Augusta in beautiful language and before concluding had thoroughly convinced every Augusta business man present that Chicago was "strong" for this section of the country. The party returned to the city from Carmichael's in the late afternoon, in time for some, who so desireo, to have a round of goif before dark. Special Sermon Today. m his morning at 11 o'clock the visit ors are invited to hear Rev. M. Ashby Jones preach a special sermon at the First Baptist church appropriate of the Chicago party's visit. Dr. Jones is pe-sonai.y acquainted with some of the party and has for a long time been a warm friend of Mr. Dickerson, of the University of Chicago. Very Fine Train. The special Pullman train carry ing the Chicago Association of Com merce parU, arriving Augusta via. Southern Railway at 6 o'clock Satur day morning, represented the finest all-steel equipment it has been pos sible to assemble. The train consists of one composite, or baggage and club car, one dining car, one parlog-obser vation car and three state-room sleep ing cars, so that each of the twenty seven members of the party has a private room, Just the same as if he were in his home or stopping at a hotel. Mr. 11. F. Miller, business manager of the association, paid a splendid tribute to the railroads of the South and oarticularly the Southern Rail way, when he stated that in nearly two thousand miles of travel, making eleven cities which the party has so far visited, the train has been oper ated exactly on schedule time, or a few minutes ahead of the schedule. All of the movements so far. except one, have been over the Southern Railway, who, perhaps, more than arip other Interest has been responsible for this trip of the Chicago associa tion, as at the outset it appreciated the great good It would do both for the South and the Chicago business men to become better acquainted and representatives of the Southern have put forth great effort in connection with the matter, one passenger agent Guilty of Contempt in Using Friedmann Vaccine New York.—Dr. Maurice A. Stum was Saturday adjudged guilty of con tempt and fined $1,550 for disobeying an Injunction which forbade him to use or sell the vaccine Invented by Dr. VTiederlch F. Stum con tended that the vaccine he adminis tered was not Friedmann’s but his own.
