Macon, Ga. —Nick Wilburn, who has been condemned to death for the mur der of James A. Kimr, a Jones couniy planter, in the fall of 1912, was taken to Cvay, in Jones county, this morning, and re-sentenced to hang during the last week in May, by Judge J. B. Park. Wilburn's conviction was recently af firmed by the supreme court of Georgia and the only thing that now stands be tween him and the gallows is Governor Slate,i.* Petitions are now in circula tion in Jones county asking The gover nor to commute Wilburn’s sentence to life imprisonment. Many of those who weVe strongest f r Wilburn's conviction have now changed their minds to a cer tain extent since Mrs. Kate King, widow of the dead man, confessed that she plotted the death of her husband, but who was subsequently acquitted by a jury of Jones county men. Among these are some of the jurors who found Wil burn guilty. They do not think Wil burn should pay the penalty with his life, when the woman, by her own con fession, was almost equally as guilty, though it was Wilburn who actually fired the shot that took King's life. Wilburn has made many friends among religious workers since he has been confined in the Bibb county jail, and these are going to exert themselves in his behalf in an effort to save him from donth on the gallows. EDUCATORS OF HU MEET Free Text Books and Com pulsory Education Stressed By Sup’t Brittain at Macon. Macon, Ga.— With close to 500 teach ers from various portions of Georgia in the city, the opening exeVeises of the annual convention of the Georgia Educa tional Association was held at the city auditorium, with State School Superin tendent M. L. Brittain as the principal speaker last night. Mr. Brittain outlined the importance of the Georgia Educational Association of educational matters in Georgia, and stressed the importance of compulsory education and free text-books in the schools. lie declared that the Georgia Educational Association is behind both of these movements and the import ance of them impresses more keenly now than ever. The plan for the state to print its own school text-book lie referred to as the “most sensaional movement of the present time.” He declared that Geor gia should have the right to see what can be done in the way of state public u tion. though he did not think that all text-books should be printed by the state at once, feeling it would be better to pick out two or three books and use them us a test. “Free text-l ooks are cf more impor tance than forcing home-made text books on the children,” said Mr. Brit tain. The state school superintendent also called for a revision of the school code in Georgia. He said the educational laws should be codified by the state school superintendent and tHe attorney general.
