Discusses Officer, Then Purity's Air; Sentenced Berlin.—An Alsatian artist named Ilansl is now undergoing a sentence of three months at Colmar for hav ing burned a piece of sugar in a local restaurant. This does not seem to be a very serious offense, tiut It was what Mansi said as he burned the sugar that caused the trouble. With a par ty of friends he was discussing the memorable Zabern affair and finally he exclaimed. That is enough of the subject. We have talked too much of that officer, von Foratner, let us purify the air by burning some sugar.” With that Hansl poured some alco hol on the sugar and set it alight. The waitress overheard the remark, a number of officers in the case noticed the little ceremony and straightaway came a complaint against the Indis creet artist of Insulting the army. The case was taken up by the public prose cutor, who demanded that Hansl be sent to prison for six months. He got off with half that term, but what Is worse still for a man with the artis tic temperament, he will have to do hard labor all the time he is In prison. This case is typical of the peculiar stringency of the German law. It Is dangerous to say anything without first considering whether by any chance your remark can be construed Into a violation of the prevailing rules and regulations. LACKED MONEY TO BUY DEATH.
