Tt was reported that returns so far made on yesterday’s notices indi cated that 35,000 bales had been stopped by houses operating for Southern mill interests. The market ope'hed steady five lower to three higher with the new crop relatively steady in sympathy with steady cables. Old crop months rallied to about yesterday’s closing figures dur ing ear y trading on covering while later deliveries sold four to five net higher. The general list turned firmer late in the forenoon on a continued good de mand for new crop months and covering by old crop shorts with prices selling about five to ten points net higher. Liverpool ca bles were about as expected. The only apparent Influence bearing upon the market, was the weather which showed signs of clearing In Texas. There was a moderate movement dur ing the forenoon and a stronger feeling developed. At noon net advances of two to s x points had been posted. Bread is the staff of life. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET Chicago, III*. —Unfavorable weather northwest gaye a lift today to the price of wheat. Snow and freezing tempera ture in that direction were taken to mean further delay where Beedtng had been backward. Higher cables count ed also against the bears. There was free selling, however on the bulge. Prices started 1-8 to S-Bal-2 higher but after- I ward reacted to a considerable extent. Estimates that storms in Argentina had resulted In a loss of more than forty million bushels made the corn market firm. Shorts here covered with a good deal of vigor. Opening prices were a shade to 1-2 higher and there was some additional gain but not all ol the advancewa s held. Oats proved relatively weak. The mar ket sympathized at first with corn strength but soon gave way under com mission house selling. Declining prices for hogs carried down provisions. C.—Weather In the cotton belt during the week ending yes terday were summarized by the Weath er Bureau today in its weekly bulletin as follows: "Over the eastern portions of the cot ton belt sunshine and warmth prevailed except for the first day o*r two. Much outdoor work was possible and vegeta tion of all kinds made favorable pro gress. Over the western portions of the cotton belt heavy rains occurred over much of Texas and Oklahoma, thorough ly saturating the soil and sufficient rain occurred in the remaining portions. Temperatures were moderate, but heavy rains and cloudy weather have inter fered with farming operations and the season is generailly regarded as late.” An Aid to Digestion.
