FIRST SESSION OF DIG COTTON CONFERENCE TO
DE HELD ON MONDAY MORNING AT 11 O’CLOCK
For Three Days Will Be Prominent Cotton Men Gathered
Here From All of the South and Also Other Parts
of the Country
ALL IMPORTANT EXCHANGES
WILL SEND DELEGATES HERE
Conference Called By Augusta Exchange to Be Held Mo' day
and Tuesday and Will Be Followed By Conference
Called By President Lawson, of Texas
Cotton Association.
All is in readiness for the big cotton
conference which will be held in Au
gusta on Monday and Tuesday and
Wednesday, May 4th, sth and6th. It
is expected that delegates to the con
ference will begin arriving today and
by tomorrow morning over one hun
dred will be in the city from various
section of the South and other parts
of the country.
The first business session of the
conference called by the Augusta Ex
change will be held at the opera house
on Monday morning at 11 o'clock. On
Monday afternoon there will be an
other business session and on Mon
day night the delegates will be en
tertained with a smoker at the Com
mercial Club. Mr. W. H. Barrett will
be toastmaster and a very enjoyable
time will be had.
To the conference called by the Au
gusta Cotton Exchange and Board of
Trade will be delegates from all of
the leading cotton exchanges in the
country. There will be three dele
gates from each exchange. The Au
gusta delegates to the conference will
be Messrs. J. P. Doughty, James To
bin and Frank H. Barrett. The pur
pose of calling the Augusta confer
ence was to improve trading in cot
ton for the benefit of the legitimate
trader.
Here are the principal subjects to
come up for discussion:

The following are some of the sub
jects to be placed before the meeting
of cotton exchanges to be held in Au
gusta on May 4th and sth:
Standards.
1. —There are to be three standards,
known as the "Western Belt," which
includes Texas. Oklahoma and Arkan
sas; "Gulf,' or "New Orleans.” made
up of Louisiana. Mississippi, and Ten
nessee; "Atlantic Standard," made up
from the Carolina*, Georgia and Ala
bama.
2— Rules and regulations for re
ceiving cotton. Mutual allowances.
Grade, weight, tare.
Arbitration.
2. -Cotton to be arbitrated In the
section front which it is shipped— Au
gusta or Savannah to be arbitration
point for Atlantic shipments; Gulf,
Memphis or New Orleans to be arbi
tration point; Western belt, Galveston
or Dallas.
4. Shipments to Fall River and New
Bedford t i be controlled on the land
ing docks, fpr weights and t«re. In
ease of controversy as to grade, sam
ples ate to be scaled and arbitrated
at Savannah, by the Savannah Cotton
Exchange. For Boston mill points,
New York. Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Canada, group A and B cotton to be
weighed within 48 hours after arrival
unless prevented by weather condi
tions. No claims to be recognized for

Knights of Pythias Notes
Fountain City Lodge No. 35, K. of
P., gave a delightful buffet luncheon
last Monday night and four Enquires
were tried in the ranks of Knight
with the assistance of the Uniform
Rank in full attendance, the meeting
was a line one and after a real good
time, everybody went home fully re
paid for their attendance.
Fountain City will give another
"blow out” oT the same nature in thy
near future and it’s hoped all the
Knights of Augusta will come out
next time, as these union meetings
help to get tne brothers closer to

Vigilant, No. 2. put on the rank of
Knight last Tuesday and this third
degree team of Vigilant Is going some

The Khight over at Oranfteville,
S. C„ at present has the best degree
team that time can get. together, but
look oul boys over tne river we will
show you very soon that old Augusta
Knight is waking up and will soon
have a real treat in store for you.
Woodlawn met last Thursday night
and put on the rank of Pagp, anil a
real good crowd came out. Wood
lawn will meet again next Thursday
and will work on pages in the rank
of Esquire.
All the Augusta lodges are getting
in shape to attend church in a body
once per month, and we be.leve this
a real good movement to bring our
brothers together and at the same
time make our social ties more
friendly.
A report from the grand lodge of
Georgia a few days ago shows that
the Augusta lodges have grown faster
than any city In George, and this
tome about by having a rew real good
hustlers in the three lodges This
does not mean that some oT our
brothers Hre not doing their full duty,
but it goes to show that s word from
each other in passing by gives us a
more friendly feeling to get our
neighbor to Join with us.
The first of July will mark the end
of the present term of offices In
Fountain City, Vigilant and Wood
lawn Lodges, these three lodges have
had about the best set of officers
that can he gotten together, and It

Purpose of Meeting.
Explanatory of the purpose of the
meeting which he bus called for Au
gusta, Mr. Lawson says:
"The objects for organizing this as
sociation of Southern exchanges are,
briefly, to secure the united and har
monious action of the various local
exchanges ami associations In all mat
ters affecting the cotton Industry, es
pecially the economic handling and
distribution of cotton from the pro
ducer to the consumer.”

willing hand to help out In anything,

Brothers Camming and Mclntosh are
also two of the hardest working men
at their station In the lodge, you can
always find them at their post when
the lodge opens and closes.
When it comes to outer guards, no
slate In the Union lias an outer guard
that can put anything over on Brother
Tump Holding of Fountain City
Lodge. He lias held this station for
more than twenty years and you can
count the times he has been absent
on your fingers.
Lewie Atkinson and Robert Ores
sell look their Knight rank in Foun
tain City last Monday night, and Robt
says he couldn't talk, only make
signs Lewie says what It takes to
get Dr. Littleton up to the lodge room
he has it. It was this way, Esquire
Blanchard had Just gone in ahead of
Lewie, and while taking part of the
Knight rank, Lewie was ordered by
the chancellor commander to get a
doctor ai once, and he at once got
Dr. Littleton over the phone and In a
few minutes the doctor was on the
scene. Lewie Atkinson and Robert
Dressell are now both full fledged
Knights of Pythias.
Fountain City has four to take the
Page rank Monday night, all the Au
gusta Knights are one and all invited
to come up and let’s talk over some
thing good for the future. Let’s get
together and make up a pHrty and go
somewhere. It's about time to take a
snort trip to some of our nearby
towns to attend lodge with them.
The Uniform Rank will give a bar
