THE SHORT SKIRT.
An especially amusing and original,
tiling about the present fashions Ik
that it the Parislenne does not buy
oh of her frocks from the same cou
turier she is.compelled to change her
pone and her *Wtty of looking at life
in general every time she changes her
frock. Unless she does one or the ©th
«*r of these equally difficult things, she
is sure to get into a hopele? s tangle
ami lose Iter mental equilibrium com
pletely, for she can by no means
combine a 'debutante slouch" with
an 1880 frock, or take an 1830 pantft
lei pose in a Turkish trouser Hklrt.
Also, when we wear one of the new
abort sldrth we must stand with our
feet squarely under us, and not with
one foot thrust out In the foreground,
os has been our custom for the laid
three seasons. That pose came in with
tlie skirt that was slit in front and
which hung in slanting folds from the
front/of the girdle, and It was adopt
ed to accentuate the draping of the
alrt.
But the short skirt, which is already
fairly well launched, is not slit, and
so de-nsnds a different pose. Th(s
does not mean that all society women
nr« wearing .short skirts, but rather
that In all probability they soon wifi
be; for it is well known that new
inodes are introduced by the very etyle
J’n rlsim nea who are not in society,
and that, with few' exceptions, wiuvi
they wear one month will almost sure
ly be \vorn the next month by the se*
lrot f* w who rub* over the social
world.
One hn# but to recall the story
the sheath skirt, and how It got
society. Although tills extreme mods
required several seasons to accomplish
this feat, it was finally accepted by
mondalnes, who even wore it much
narrower and with a much deeper slit
than the original models launched by
the demi-mondalnes And yet. the
first of these skirts was considered so
during that the Wearers were obliged
to appeal to the pnlh e for protection
when they paraded them before the
eyes of an aatoundod world!
One short skirt, which 1 saw re
i ently and which attracted much atg
tentinn, cleared the ground by
inches in front and on tin* sides, whijo
i the back a narrow, square panel
touched the heels; the panel was not
separate from the skirt, but wrh part
of It.—Vogue.
