It is all very well for the big man v'ho owns that
ocean called industry. The black clouds above and the
big waves interest him He is the Neptune of the in
dustrial ocean.
But it is a hard life for the child that muat float

Mayes at Helalr was well known for

The following is an account of Cap
tain Mayes’ death, as appeared in The
Albany (Ga.) Herald:
“Mr. Samuel G. Mayes died at the
home of his son, Mr. G. C. Mayes,
president of the Georgia Cotton Com
pany, on North Jefferson street, at

years of age. and his death was due
to the infirmities of old age. He had
been in very poor health for the past
year, and was critically ill during tne
past month.
"The deceased was a prominent
planter near Augusta before and after

one time, before he retired on ac
count of his advanced age, was promi
nent In Augusta business circles. He
the choice is between early drowning and a long life of
anxiety.
We Americans are very proud of our industry, our

He was a member of the Episcopal
church.
"Besides his wife, Mrs. Sarah C.
Mayes, the deceased is survived by
the following sons and daughters:
Messrs. G. C. Mayes and H. G. Mayes,
of this city; Mr. Rhydon G. Mayes,
of Thomasville; Mrs. George O.
Holmes, of Jacksonville, and Mrs.
Marion Twiggs, of Macon. Several
grandchildren also survive him, in
cluding Hanging Mayes and Mary
Crawford Mayes, of this city.
“The funeral will be held at 4; 30
o’clock this afternoon at St. Paul's
church. The rector, Rev. Gerald Cor
nell, will officiate. Interment will fol
low in Oakview cemetery. The fol
lowing gentlemen will act as pall
bearers: Messrs. J. P. Clark, H. F.
Ray, Y. C. Rust, John D. Twiggs, A.
J. Lippitt and J. S. Billlngslea.”
