The finance committte of the city council o; Augusta will have a meet 'ng this afternoon at 5 o'clock, when a number of Important matters will be taken up. Among them will prob ably be the matter of the Marv War ren Home purchase. At the last meet ing of city council the proposed pur chase of the Mary Warren Home by the city was referred to the finance committee. Just whether or not the city will purchase the present property of the home on Broad street is not known, but it is a valuable property and will doubtless bring a good price. RULING AFFECTS' GEOUGIAJATES Long and Short Haul Decision Handed Down By Interstate Commerce Commission. Washington.—Deviations by rail roads south of the Potomac and Ohio »nd east of the Mississippi Rivers from the long and short haul provis ion of the law, were dejflt with in a decision hailed dowu today by the interstate comnwrce commission. Hundreds of applications were made by southern railroads for per mission to exact a higher charge on some freight traffic to intermediate points ehan to the more distant ter minals. in many instances the com mission has granted this permission; in others it is denied. The decision will have the effect of materially changing the relation of latcs nov existing throughout the South Rates from New York, Cin cinnati, Louisville and New Orleans to Atlanta, Athens, Ga„ or Cordele. Ga.. rates from Cincinnati, Louisville and New Orleans to Rome, Ga., can not he exceeded at intermediate points. Juror No. 7 For Becker; Talks With His Wife New York. —Work of selecting a jury was resumed at the opening this morning of the third day of Charles Becker’s trial for the murder of Her man Rosenthal. One of the first tales men to be examined, Paul D. Camors, a bond salesman, was accepted as ju ror No. 7. Becker, who lias not been allowed to receive his wife in the Tombs, came into the court room a half hour early to take to her. The pair drew away from others in the room and talked in low tones. . Electrical Device to Record Votes of House Washington. —Members of the house will have their votes recorded with an electrical device at the opening of the next session of congress. Decis ion to install such a device was agreed upon at a conference of house lead ers. The house will be asked to ap propriate $20,000 to purchase the ap paratus. Orders have been issued to the members pf'the company to he at the armory at 6:30 a. m. Sunday, May 9th, and every member of this company Is urged to be present. Any member who so desires c in sleep at the armory Saturday night. All of the local militia, including the cavalry (Hussars) will take part in this feature of the film.
