HARD-FOUGHT GAME LOST TO
FOXES YESTERDAY -6 TO 5
The Combacks Started Their Scoring Early in Contest, But
Finally Lost in the Seventh and Eighth Innings, When Co
lumbus Bunched Hits and Scored Two Runs in Each.
The Combacks started their scoring
early in. the game yesterday by mak
ing three runs in the first inning but
fint *ly lost the game to the Foxes by
the score of 6 to 5. The local aggre
gation was defeated in the seventh and
eighth innings when Columbus bunch
ed hits off Hawkins and scored twq,
runs in each inning. Augusta's “white
wash” playing in the first inning drove
Williams out of the box, who was
replaced by Camnitz.
Pulled Him Out.
Neyenhouse began the game for the
Combacks but when the Columbus
bunch managed to slip two runs over
the rubber Manager “Babe” Brouth
ers pulled him out and replaced him
with the left-hander, Hawkins.
Brouthers is due a great deal of
praise for his judgment yesterday,
even if the Augusta lads did lose. The
quick way in which he benched Nien
house a oon as he saw that he was
not in form goe sa long way towards
proving that “Babe” will take no more
chances in the future, but will go af

And that reason must be a
good one, or we would not have

Our best reason for making

good as any paint and sell it to

you can buy the same quality

Another very good reason Is

Twiggs’ Work on the Levee is
Attracting Wide Attention
—I
Augusta Firm Complimented By Trade Journals on Progress
of Work—Have Now Secured Another Contract, That of
Rip-Rapping Banks from sth St. to East Boundary.
Tlio work that is being done on the
levee in this city by the A. .1. Twiggs
and Son, well-known contractors, is>
attracting attention all over the
country. Augusta and Twiggs and
Son ire receiving some valuable ad
vertising on account of the manner
In which this work is being executed.
In a recent issue of The Excavating
Engineer, one of the leading trade pa
pers of the country, published in Mil
waukee, there appeared a three-page
illustrated article on “Construction of
the Augusta Levee.’’ This magazine
has a world-wide circulation and the
article was worth much to the con
tracting firm as well as to the city.
Speaking of the work The Excavating
Engineer said in part:
Splendid Progress.
“Splendid progress is reported from
Augusta, Ga., on the Augusta levee
and flood protection, a municipal pro
ject to insure the city against the dis
astrous floods of recent years, caus
ed by the Savannah River overflow
ing its hanks and resulting in much
damage to hu-lnegs and property.
Early In 1912 the progressive city of
Augusta voted a bond issue of $1,000,-
000 for the building of levees, flood
gates, retaining walls, and other nec
essary flood precautions.
“A flood commission consisting of
five well-known business men was im
mediatley appointed, plans drawn by
City Engineer Nisbet Wingfield and
the various sections were advertised
for bids. The Tirst contract placed
was for the canal control gates, which
was awarded to A. .1. Twiggs & Son,
a local firm of high standing, they
being the lowest bidders on this work.
These gates were made necessary to
control the waters In the canal, which
flow through the central portion of
the city, and divert it again to the
ftivannsh River above the city limits,
in case of a flood.
For Water Control.
“Gates were constructed also at
the different mill races, along the
river to control water from the canal,
used by the various mills for power
l imposes (three in number) are re
inforced concrete lift, gates. They
cost about $7. r ),000 each. They are of
a very attractive design and are con
structed to withstand the pressure of
maximum flood waters when the
gates are closed. There Is an earth
embankment at either side.
“At various points along the river,
reinforced concrete retaining walls
were consrtucted, owing to the limit
ed space between certain buildings
and the river, which would not ad
mit of a full earth embankment. The
c;s' of moving the buildings being
much in excess oT the retaining walls,
the latter method of course was
adopted. The embankment or levee
proper was let in three sections, the
first section contained about 200,000
yards, the second about 250,000 yards
and the third section about 200,000
yards All this work was awarded to
A. .1 Twiggs A Son, an up-to date and
hustling firm of local contractor* and
engineers. From the progress made
and from the manner in which the
contracts have been carried on the
City of Augusta ha-s been most for

the material is a very hard calico clay

success without biasing. Another
