FRiOAY, MAY 15. EBEAT ACTIVITY GOV’TJBSENALS Sec’y of War Says Work Being Done By Officers Directly in Charge-—No New Orders. Washington.—Activity which began yesterday in government arsenals and at coast artillery posts follows the precautionary arrangements of the war department in the Mexican situa tion, Secretary Garrison said today. The secretary declared that no new orders had been issued to any branch of the service. “The coast artillery has been under orders to be in readiness for some time.’’ said the secretary, “It was part of our original plan to create provis ional infantry regiments from the coast artillery.” The secretary said that the work being done in government arsenals was in compliance with orders from officers directly in charge and that he had no knowledge of it. Theodore Roosevelt’s health, mem bers of his family have requested that no public reception, similar to the greeting extended to him on his re turn from his African trip, be ar ranged on his arrival in New York from Brazil next week. Hartford, Conn.—On account of the cold, transplanting of tobacco will be from ten days to two weeks late in the Connecticut tobacco belt. Mellen of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, after a conference with Chief Counsel Folk of the interstate commerce com mission, left today for New Haven. Conn. There he will secure docu ments and papers which the commis sion desires in connection v h it . in vestigation of financial operations ui the New Haven Road. Mr. Mellen will continue his testi mony before the commission Tues day. The subpoenaed directors of the New Haven, William Rockefeller, Lewis Cass Ledyard. Geo F. Baker and Geo. Macculloch Miller, have been directed to hold themselves in readiness to be examined. It is re garded as quite unlikely that either Mr. Rockefeller and Mr. Miller will appear as both have presented certif icates of illness. DURYEA’S $1,000,000 ESTATE. New York. —The million dollar es tate of General Hiram Durvea, who was killed on May 5 by bis son, Ches ter, Duryea, will be divided among his three children, the patricide sharing equally with his brother, Harrv H Duryea, and his sister, Mrs. Henry O. Anderson, according to friends of the family to whom the general is said to have made known his plans for the disposal of his property. KIDNAPERS DEMAND $5,000.
