Leach, by practicing frugality and by holding up fight promoters for the near-limit of their bankrolls, man aged to gather about $30,000 unto himself by the year A. D. 1910. And then some "friend” got an audience with Leach and told him how easy it would be for him to take that $30,- 000 down to Wall Street, leave it lin ger there .'or a few months, and then bring it back with anywhere from SIOO,OOO to $1,000,000 in addition. "And, like a boob, I went,” says Leach. "I stuck around Wall Street for a few months while those feMows monkeyed with my money and when I decided it was time that I got back my $30,000 and the profits, X was told that tl T'e wasn’t any profits and that the s3i *OO had evaporated. "Gee, tha was a wallop—the hard est I ever got in my life. It took ail the courage and ambition out of me for a time, and I didn't care wha'. came or went. It seemed pretty tough to have a bunch of crooks take away all the money you’ve spent many, years in saving. And the worst of it, just at the time I felt pretty poor physi cally. It seemed doubtful if I could Aver make good in the ring again.” But Cross has ‘‘made good" since. He’s ’’come back” with a vengeance and shown himself to be a better tighter, am' a bigger drawing card than he was six or seven years ago. In the last two years he has grabbed SOUTHERN LEAGUE Vols 4; Pels 5. At New Orleans — Score: It. H. E. Nashville . . When Cross turned in his income tax blank some months ago he gave $28,000 as the figure for his annual earnings during the year previous. Of course, a few thousand of this was made through his side issue busi ness of plugging teeth, but about $25,- 000 came from plugging the other fel lows. “I guess I’ve got about $50,000 laid aside now,” said Cross some months ago. “And you can take it from me that it’s laid aside —those Wall Street wolves won’t get it. They don’t play fair—they don’t play a man’s game. They lure you into their net like a spider does a fly, and then they choke every dollar out of you.” Over in that dear, old England, the American golfing clan busied itself lately in doing their final bit of swat ting in preparation for the big ama teur tournament which opens Monday (today). Despite the fact that some of Uncle Sam’s invading gang hasn't done overly well in practice games to date, it is said that all of them are in fine condition, have become thor oughly (familiar with the Sandwich course, and that they will turn in some surprising scores before the fracas is over. The British golfing clan is more anxious to see Francis Ouimet, the juvenile conqueror of Harry Vardon and Edward Ray. than it is to gaze upon all the other Americans togeth- This makes It sure that whenever Ouimet appears in a match he will have the biggest gallery, t NATIONAL LEAGUE Giants Defeated.
