C.—Thc eradication of Iho cattle tick In the creator por tion of the state of Mississippi has hfpn accompanied or followed hy the formation of a number of county live stock associations. Inspectors attach ed to the United States Department of Agriculture have assisted In or ganizing twenty of these associations tor improving the entile industry. Au example of their work is afford -7' , y a . r, 'l ,ort Of the activities of the Adams County Association which vas organized at Natchez in 1912. Since the county was cleared of ticks and the way opened for importations, the following purebred cattle have been brought in: '•p' ' l , Hulls. It has already im ported twenty purebred bulls and six teen purebred cows, and In March two members of the association were com missioned to buy $31,000 worth of lure stock in Missouri. This is In line with the recommendation of the Department of Agriculture to pur chase purebred hulls co-operatively lor use in the various districts of the count y. Another very active live stock as sociation Is that of Madison county. This was organized in March, 1912, with a membership of twenty which lias since grown to fifty. At first the association devoted Itself to the extermination of the tick, but as soon as this was sufficiently far advanced to make the importation of valuable animals a sound business venture, a vigorous campaign for the improve ment of cattle was begun. Meetings were held throughout the county for the purpose of familiarizing the people with the importance of cither elimi nating the scrub stock entirely or of Improving their herds by the Introduc tion of purebred sires. Improved methods of feeding were also advo cated at these meetings. District as soclatlons were organized In the coun ty and assisted in the purchase of reg istered bulls so that the small farm ers might have in rotation the benefit of their services Altogether 83 hulls and 290 cows were introduced last year for breeding purposes. Iteports from Tennessee and Ala bama Indicate that the movement is gaing ground there also. Probably No Change in Georgia R. R. Commission Atlanta, Ga. —Present Indicntione are that the coming primary election In Georgia will not change the person nel of the railroad commission of the slate as it is now constituted. The commission as at present organized has lieen able to accomplish the dif ficult task of satisfying the public at large and protecting all its Interests, yet at the Rame time convincing the big corporations nnd the railroads that they have a fair and honest hoard to deal with. Business men here nnd generally throughout the state, it is declared, are of the opinion that no change ought to tie made In the hoard. There Is no serious opposition In sight against Commissioner Paul R. Tram mell. who is slated to run to succeed himself. Th race he ran two years ago showed his substantial strength In nil sections of the state, and his friends say he Is even stronger now than he was at that time. He has the advantage of a constituency which Is not bounded by the lines of any sec tion or fraction. A SECOND EDISON. Savannah, Ga. —A movement is on foot to have the retail merchants of Savannah adopt the custom of closing their places of business one afternoon a week during the summer months. At a meeting of the Retail Mer chants Association Wednesday the matter will he considered, and it is likely that some action will be taken. Some of the members of the associa tion are understood to favor the plan. Bast year a committee was appoint ed by the City Federation of Women's Organizations to take the matter of a half holiday during the warm months up with the merchants. This com mittee is still at work and is actively advocating thfe proposition again. West Broad Objected. A good deal of opposition to the half holiday plan was encountered last year among the merchants on West Rroad street. The merchants on Broughton street and in other sections were for the most part favorable to the idea, but the opposition of the West Broad merchants caused the plan to be abandoned for the time be ing. It is believed the merchants In all sections of the city are now In fa vor of the half holiday plan. Thursday is suggested as the most suitable day for the half holiday be cause It comes in the middle of the week between Sundays, and for the further reason it is one of the light | business days. Either a Wednesday or a Thursday half holiday is prefer able to a Saturday half holiday be cause there are thousands of indus trial workers and others who cannot get off any other day except Satur day and who have no other oppor tunity to make purchases and conduct their business with the retailers. Helps Efficiency. In Atlanta there Is a movement on foot to have the half holiday custom adopted by retail merchants generally. It Is pointed out that one afternoon of mid-week rest through the warm season Is helpful to business efficiency. There is more real benefit to workers In two periods of rest during the week, one in the middle of the week and one on Sunday, than in one long pe riod of rest from Saturday noon to Monday morning. Arthur B. Levy, president of the Retail Merchants Association, said yesterday the suggestion that the stores close one afternoon In the mid dle of the week had not been acted upon by the association, and for that reason he did not care to discuss it. Some action will he taken In all prob ability at the meeting Wednesday, he said. The half holiday Idea was first agi tated when Daniel 3 Hogan was presi dent of the association. Tt Is understood that such a move ment will soon be undertaken In Au gusta. Its Importance is proven by the agitation it is given In many cities of any sl*e, and It Is likely that the Is sue will be raised In this city. It Is possible that the matter will be taken up In the near future by the Mer chants and Manufacturers Association. MANY AT CURTIS REVIVAL LAST NIGHT; FINE SERMON Rev, R. W.
