Hustling and Progressive S. C. Town Forms' a Gold Mining
Company to Develop Old Dorn Mining Property.
McCormick, 3. C.—The Village of
McCormick, S. C., is taking on quite
a boom!
A new company has bought the Mc-
Cormick gold mines and will make
big improvements.
These consist of cyanide mill, cost
ing $50,000, to work the low brade
ore, Vhich is composed largely of
worked over tailings from previous
operations.
In addition to this, the McCormick
Mining Company, the present owners,
have leased the mineral rights of the
property to the Tennessee Coal and
Iron Company, to all the manganese
by-rroducts, which are in themselves,
an important item.
Manganese is used largely in the
manufacture of iron and steel, and it
wIH require costly improvements to
manipulate the large amount that the
mines will yield
In addition, these big improve
ments, the McCormick Mining Com

McCormick Mining Company of South
Carolina.
The McCormick Mining Company
acquired 236 acres of mineral rights
last January and immediately put
about 20 hands at work clearing away
the brush and over burden, which had
accumulated to a considerable extent
while the mines lay idle.
The company is composed of W. F.
tie Camp. Chicago; T. S. Dinn, Den
ver; Charles Turgrlmson, Chicago;
L. E. Cruse, Chicago; A. J. Overton,
Washington. D, C. All these gentle
men are experienced mining experts,
as well as well-known capitalists, in
their home cities.
Mr. W. F. de Camp, who was in the
city last night, will have charge of
OUR MOTTO:
I the active operations at McCormick.
He is now on his way to Chicago to
make arrangements for the machin
ery for the cyanide mill.
The company has already made a
contract to furnish, the C. & W. C.
Railroad with water for their engines.
As McCormick occupies an elevated
position of the ridge between Stevens
Creep and the Savannah, this Is a
great convenience to the railroad.
The water is primped from the shaft
in great abundance.
Formerly Known aa the Dorn Mines.
These mines were formerly known
as the Dorn Mines and were owned
by Jimmie Dorn, whose reputation ex
tended, in mining circles, all over the
world by reason of the fact that he
found an immense nugget of gold
while o; erating the mine.
Mr. Dorn died, leaving his descend
ants quite a large estate. Mr. J.
Marvin Dorn, well-known in this city,
was his son and operated the mines
for some time after the war.
The mineral rights, and perhaps
the land, were sold to Cyrus* H. Mc-
Cormick. the multimillionaire reaper
man of Chicago, by Maj. Thomas Mor
gan. a former resident of this city
for $50,000.
Major Morgan married Miss Hattie
Casey, a celebrated belle and beauty,
and the eldest daughter of Dr. Henry
R Casey, of Waverly Hall, Columbia
County.
Mr. Cyrus H. McCormick was in
the habit of spending his winters here
with his family. He spoke of mak
ing great improvements at the Mc-
Cormick mines, but died before his
plans were ever consummated.
McCormick Will Be Benefited.
That McCormick will he greatly
benefited by the contemplated im
provements of the mines goes with
out saying. There are half a million
tons of manganese in sight alone, alt
of which will be shipped to Birming
ham to the Tennessee Coal and Iron
Company.
McCormick is at the junction of
the Savannah Valley Railroad, which
goes to Anderson and the Spartan
burg branch of the C. & W. C.,
which also goes to Greenville. So
that already, it is the most important
point between Augusta and Green
wood.
In addition to this, there has been
a line talked of for some time, from
Abbeville to Augusta, via McCormick.
It takes time for these projects to
materialize, but they must come in
time.
There are some live, wideawake
people at McCormick, and they are
not letting any grass grow under
their feet when it comes to building
up their town.

TWO BAD NEGRO MEN ARE

Darkies Fined $lO and $25
For Making- Themselves a
Nuisance on the Trolley Line
Two negro men. Andrew Williams
anti 1* rank .Brooks by name, wore
fined $25 and $lO, respectively by the
recorder yesterday morning for an al
tereation on one of the Aiken cars.
illiams began the disturbance by
cursing and talking in a most offen
sive manner to a colored woman who
was on board. Ilis language became
so unpleasant that a lady who was
sitting near him got up and moved
to tlie front of the car. The conduc
tor then went to the man and told him
he would have to get off, which ho
refused to do- making himself heard
all over the car with language unfit
for publication. He protested that
there were no two men on board who
could put him off.
The car was going out McKinno
street at the time. They stopped it
and called tor the police, who came
to the rescue and took Williams to the
barracks. Meanwhile, Brooks, the
other negro, was grumbling and
threatening to take sides with Wil
liams. to such an extent that the con
ductor told him to get off, too. He
refused and cursed the conductor,
whereupon he was “sent in” to keep
his friend company. This is at least
the fifth case this year of negroes
who have had to he put off of street
cars for making themselves a nuis
ance. Both men pleaded guilty to be
ing more or less drunk at the time.
