The sudden appearance of some form of
•kin eruption calls for the Immediate use
of S. S. S., the famous blood purifier.
People will wonder why, when apparently
In the bast of health generally, the skin
breaks out with unsightly eruptions. It
is accounted for by the fact that deep in
the Interstices, the small lymphatic spaces,
there are hidden away germs that have
lain dormant for weeks, perhaps years.
Through some cause such as a cold, the
system is in a low state of resistance and
the germs then jump at the opportunity
nud some form of blood trouble makes its
appearance.
If the mucous membranes are Involved
we have colds, catarrh, bronchitis, pneu
monia and so on. If the general process
of nutrition is disturbed we have rheuma
tism. Indigestion, headache and anemia.
And wheja the skin breaks out it shows
how impurities have affected the blood
generally. Then is the time to attack dis
ease vigorously with S. S. S.
The action of this splendid purifier is a
sweeping aid to the natural tendency of
the body to itself of all harmful germs.
For if this we?e aot true none of us would
survive the second week of infancy. The
course of 8. 8. S. leads through the vast
network of lymphatic veins wherein germs
are attacked and held down in the tiny
glands of the lymphatic system. Then
there is the complex and extensive plan

at the end of this season, got many of
the players whose contracts do not ex
pire until the end of the 1914 season
to sign up new contracts that carried
them along for two or three years in
addition.
This was the case with the Brook
lyn Dodgers, the Giants, the Boston
Braves .the Phillies, Red Sox. Naps
and practically ell the other major
league clubs.
Those contracts are legal and bind
the magnate to pay the big salaries
they call for. The magnate mir.not
“duck” the obligation. And because
he can’t it’s certain that until those
contracts expire—which won’t be un
til 1916 and 1917, he's got to pay out
each year In salaries from $25,000 to
of mucous membranes lining all the cavi
ties of the body. Herein is where poison
ous matter is prepared or converted into
a substance to be readily eliminated by
the mucous membranes of the lungs, liver,
kidneys and bladder and by the skin, which
is a modified form of mucous membrane.
The well-known catalytic action of S. S. S

$50,000 more a year than he ever
paid before.
“During the period of Federal ac
tivity the players held the whip hand.”
says Chance. Many players worth only
$3,000 a year, at the most, held up
their blub owners for $4,000 and $5.-
000. They got more money than they
were worth because the owners felt it
was a safe plan to agree to this un
just demand than to letthem go to
tho Federals.
But the day of reckoning for the
players is coming. When the base
ball war ends and the existing con
tracts have expired, salaries will go
down with a bump. They have reach
ed the crest —the very highest in his
tory. And this condition Is almost
ruinous to the club owners. But the
club owners will have their day, too,
just like the players are having it
now. ‘
“The era of high salaries for ball
players soon must come to an end.
When It does you can depend on it
that players who are drawing $5,000
and $6,000 this year won't get anything
like that figure. They’ll he lucky to
get $3,000. The magnates must re
trieve the losses that have been oc
casioned by the Federal war and you
n ay depend on it that when they In
stead of the players, are once again In
control of the situation they will do
the retrieving with a vengeance.
There Is no doubt but what Chance
knows whereof he articulates. When
th#magnates get control of the situa
tion once again they'll even things up
for the old-up game that most of the
ball players played last winter.
But that won't prevent the majority
of the players from having a lifelong
laugh. At least 60 per cent of the
players who were parties in the hold
up game will be ready for the discard
when their long term contracta ex
pire—even before. And they'll always
he able to chuckle over the fact that
in the winter of 1914. when they had
begun to fear a terrific cut In their
1914 salary, or even being shoved off
to the minora, they were able to shake
down their employers for a salary al
most double that which they had re

“Little Girl,” Here's a
Way to Look Pretty
Vienna.—The infallible way to re
tain the fascinating but elusive feat
urt in facial expression, the dimple. Is
pointed out by M. Jacques La Tour,
the noted Paris beauty expert.
“We lose our dimples,” he declares,
“because we do not eat enough sugar."
“We speak of a girl with a dimpled
cheek as a sweet girl," M. La Tour
said. “We commonly associate smiles
and dimples, and associate both with
sweetness. And In this we are un
consciously right, for dimples stand
for sweetness just as much as sugar.
Whatever causes the tissue to die,
causes the dimple to disappear. Su
gar Is the greatest builder of tissue.
“Do not lose your dimples. As long
as you can retain them you will keep
tho appearance of youth. The dimple
Is a priceless gift of the gods. But
Ido not mean an artificial dimple. I
want the real thing retained to almost
any age by woman or by man, and you
can retain It If you eat sugar.
“Each person must, of course, be a
judge of his own diet. But no one
should stint as to the amount of sugar
he eats unless he or she is growing too
plump. Too much plumpness Is al
most as ruinous to the facial ttsoues
which produce the dimple as too great
emaciation."
THE SLOW BUT DECIDED
PROGRESS OF SOCIALISM
Paris.—The most Important fact
brought out by the 1914 elections for
the chamber of deputies is the slow
but decided progress mfde by social
ism. This Is all the more significant
because the body of the French peo
ple is Intensely conservative and clings
to existing things tenaciously. In eight
years the socialist vote has Increased
by 620,772. In the elections of 1906,
the party received 877,999 votes; this
figure was Increased to 1,110,661 in
1910, and this year the socialist candi
dates polled altogether 1,398,771 votes.
The total number of votes polled be
ing 8,328,876, the socialist vote amonnt
ed to a little over 16 per cent.
