Odessa. —An elephant holds the cen ter of the stage In this town. A broad trench has ben dug around the mena gerie where he is caged, and armed police are on guard night and day, for the big animal lias turned rogue and is confined by bars which it may break at any moment. Efforts to poison him so far have been unsuccessful. The elephant belongs to a traveling menagerie, and has been in the pos session of its owner for about twenty years. It weighs something over four tons. The animal has always been well behaved until some days ago, when its attendant saw it trying to tear down the bars of its cage. Ho gave it a blow on the trunk and set to work strengthening the bent bars. His attention being diverted for a few moments, the elephant knocked him down with its trunk, and started boring him with its tusks. His shouts brought asistance, and he was drag ged into safety by his feet. Afterwards the elephant would allojy no one to approach it, and early one morning broke one of the chains at taching its feet to the cage. It being | feared that the animal might escape and perhaps attack the cage contain ing the lions and tigers, application was made to the police authorities to decide how the elephant should be disposed of. The chief of police came to the menagerie with a detachment of foot and mounted police provided with rifles. The Commandant of Odessa and a public prosecutor were also there, and a consultation was held with several doctors and zoolo gical specialists from the University. The authorities decided that it would he dangerous to try and shoot the elephant, as the walls of the me nagerie were only constructed of wood, and might be, perforated by the bullets. Recourse, therefore, was had to poisoning, and a quantity of prus sic acid was obtained. The elephant was known to be par j tlcularly fond of oranges and cakes. An orange soaked with prussic acid ! was thrown into the cage. The ele phant picked it up with its trunk, but after smelling it, threw it aside and | stamped upon it. The same thing happened in regard to the cakes. The elephant ate them all except the one | which had ben poisoned. 1 Vodka was another of the animal’s |—Sambo’s,"— weaknesses —Yambo Is probably a Russian adaptation of Juumbo —and consequently a pall fill - | ed witli the spirit was inserted in t I • cage. Yambo smelt it. raised it in h[y air, and spilt the contents on the floor. An effort will be made to chloroform , the elephant. Amusing Story Regarding Emperor Francis Joseph Vienna.—Aa amusing story told to day the relations existing between Emperor Francis Joseph, aged 83, who has been ill with bronchitis, and the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir-presumptive. The story goes that a policeman recently found a parrot In a tree outside the Belvedere, the Vienna palace of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand. As the parrot used the names of various august per sonages, the chief of police was In formed and he ordered the bird to be brought before him for cross-examina tion. The parrot talked freely, using the most violent expletives but always winding up with the phrase ‘'He’ll live to be a hundred!" Thereupon the chief of police said there was only one man In Vienna to whom the parrot could belong and order ed the Idrd to he taken hack to the Belvidere. RUSSIAN EDUCATOR PLANS PRESERVATION OF GAME St. Petersburg.—M, Kasso,, Russian Minister of Education, has brought forward a scheme for the preservation of the rarer kinds of game, such as the bison and the ibex. FUTURE CARDINAL IS OF A VERY HUMBLE ORIGIN Berlin.—Archbishop von Bettlnger, of Munich, who Is soon to lie made a cardinal, is a man of very humhls origin. His father was a poor black smith at Landstuhl in the Bavarian Palatinate, and the future cardinal spent a part of his early years at tlw forge with his father. During his career as priest and bishop von Bettlnger has taken an active interest in politics, zealously promoting the cause of the clerical party. He was made archbishop of Munich seven years ago and since then he has become a great favorite of the Bavarian eourt, and of Count von Hertling, the prime minister.
