STORES ‘TRUST'
Judge Adams, for Defense,
Objects to Method of Judge
Speer in Panel of Jurors.
Savannah, Ga.—ln the United States
court this morning the government
announced ready Itt the trial of Nasi:
et al, in what is known as the “naval
stores trust" case. Judge Samuel it.
Adams, formerly for the deien.-e an
nounced that he would oe ready os
p.-on as the first panel of jurors had
been called. When this had been done,
he objected to the entire panel alleg
ing that the jury box bad been il
legally prepared, by Judge Emory
Speer April 30th, 11)10, when the names
now in the jury box wore placed there.
Tho contention of the defense Was that
Judge Speer hail allotted each county
in the district a certain number of
jurors with the idea of practically
eliminating Chatham county in which
Savannah is located. Judge Adams
said there were but 75 Savannahians
whose names were in the box. He
contended the county was entitled to
at least twice that number. TTe de
clared the action of Judgu Speer in ar
ranging the manner in which the
names should go into the jury box un
authorized and unconstitutional, and
arguments upon bis motion to strike
the entire panel began at 10:30 o’clock.
United States District Attorney
Akerman is to defend the method in
which the jury was drawn.
The defendants are E. S. Nash, S.
I’. Shotter, J. I<\ Cooper Myers and
Carl Moeller. They are all front Sa
vannah except Mr Moeller who is from
Jacksonville.
Judge W. T. Grubbs, of Birmingham,
Ala., is presiding at the trial.
After hearing at length from Mr.
Adams and the district attorney upon
the motion to strike the jury panel,
| Judge Grubbs overruled the motion.
The selection of the jury was then
ibegun.
AI THE BIJOU
George Kleine’s Photo Play
“Antony and Cleopatra” Moat
Gorgeous Picture Ever Shown
In This City.
The hunger of tho ipublic for bigness
and beauty is demonstrated by the
way little, big, old and young go af
ter these tremendous things that the
“movies” afford day after day.
George Kieine, the producer of “Quo
Vadis” and “The Last Days of Pom
peii," sent "Antony and Cleopatra” to
the Bijou for two days. Today, on
account of the educational value of
the picture school children will be
admitted for ten cents. The pictures
were nude in Italy on the shores of
the Mediterranean Sea. Most of the
actors are Italian and the total cast
numbers 4,500 people. At first one
is disposed to consider the munoeuv
lings as a trifle “paste-board-y," but
suddenly it all comes wonderfully to
life. The Egyptian scenes are tradi
tioanlly perfect to the mind of the
oldest gruybeard and tho smallest
school child in the audience. Signora
Gonzales is a superbly voluptuous fe
line Cleiipatra in the country where
the eat is deity—no lean, shrewd,
conniving beauty, as she has been
sometimes painted. Signor An
thony Novelll fully characterizes
the noble Roman degenerated by sub
serving intellect to passion. The
scene in the Roman senate, with vast
numbers of white robed patriots spir
itedly discussing Mark Antony's
traitorous conduct, presents an ex
quisite realism of those ancient days
of honor. Undoubtedly the must strik
ing moments of tho drama occur
when the Roman army sets out for
Africa; the earnestness of the war
riors, tile queer ships, the obvious
perils of the journey; then the silent
serious landing by night and the
weary inarch along the flat sea-wash
ed shores and over fields and hills to
the Egyptian capital, with its endless
and thoughtless revelry. Also, the
refined cruelty of this beautiful, bar
baric queen is admirably depicted in
Ihe way in which she condemns her
pretty slave rival, Charmlan, to the
crocodiles. The pictures taken as a
whole are most wonderful and In
keeping with the high standard that
one is accustomed to in a Klelne
production. "Antony and Cleopatra”
will he seen again today. Tomorrow
and Thursday the monarch of them
all “Quo Vadis’’ will he shown and
the Mil for Friday and Saturday will
be Mr. Kleine’s latest masterpiece,
“For Napoleon and France.”
