PIRATE TALE OF
FLORIDA KEYS
Key West Spongers Declare
War on the Tarpon Springs
Fleet. Burn and Rob.
Tampa, Fla. —A tale of piracy, of
looting a ship and robbing her crew,
and finally of destruction of the ship
by fire, off Marquesas Banks, some
25 miles from Key West, is told by
the crew of the schooner Edna Louise,
belonging to the Tarpon Springs
sponge tleet. The crew made Tampa
this morning, coming along the lower
Florida coast in a lifeboat into
which they claim they were forced
by some 25 men who came out of
Key West Saturday in o steam launch
boarded the Louise and at the point
of pistols made her crew of seven
teen men load the lifeboat with a
scant stock of provisions and leave
in the small craft. After the Louise’s
crew left the boat, according to the
story of Captain Henri Michel, the
Greek commander, the Louise was set
on fire. They saw her burn to the
water's edge and the pirates leave.
Then the lifeboat was pointed toward
Cape Romaine, where they landed for
fresh water coming thence to Tampa
under sail.
Captain Michel says the men on
the launch took the Louise's crew by
surprise, leaping aboard with pistols
drawn. They robbed the men of
what money and other valuables they
had, appropriated some of the diving
outfits, ruined the remainder, then
drove the crew overside into the life
boat.
This is second occurrence of the
kind in the past few days. On Fri
day the schooner Amelia of the Tar
pon sponge fleet, was sunk half a
mile from the Key West dock, by Key
West spongers, who dynamited her,
according to the story told by her
crew, who arrived here Sunday by
steamer. There is bad blood between

THE SONG THAT
AfIAOE HER WEEP
The South Atlantic Squadron of
His Majesty’s Navy dropped anchor
in a British colonial port in the trop
ics and the band came ashore from
the flagship to give a concert on ihe
plaza. A stately American girl on the
Arm of a red-jacketed lieutenant
W’alked up near the pavilion and it
did not require much guessing to tell
what part of the United States sue
came from.
"I say, old chap,” said the lieuten
ant to the bandmaster, “Let’s have a
dash of something from States—not
that blawsted ‘Yankee Doodle,’ but —
aw—sentimental, doncher know!”
The bandmaster said “page 18” and
then from the military band, like a
great organ, came: “The sun shines
bright on my old Kentucky Home” —
the notes appeared to pronounce the
familiar words on the still night air.
“Tis summer, the darkies are gay”—
the American girl tried to swallow
something that rose in her throat.
“The corn top’s ripe”—she reached
for her handkerchief—“and the mea
dow’s in the bloom"—it was no use!
She must weep and she did—right on
the lieutenant’s red jacket.
Perhaps this meloily which reached
the young American girl’s heart is
the most popular of all of Stephen C.
Foster’s songs. In any event most
Kentuckians revere it as much as
they could any hymn. This song and
all other good “Songs That Never
Grow Old” are in The Herald’s rare
and unique collection. A coupon ap

RITCHIE GIVEN
GOOD DRUBBIG
Charlie White, of Chicago,
Turns Trick on Californian in
Hard 10-Round Go.
Milwaukee, Wis.—Charlie White of
Chicago decisively defeated Willie
Ritchie of California in a ten-round
boxing bout here last night. White
outfought the Westerner in almost all
of the rounds.
The bout was vicious and bloody at
all times, with Ritchie bleeding pro
fusely from the face and nose. His
eyes were nearly closed at the end and
he was a sorry looking champion long
before the bout ended. White bled
some, too, but was far the fresher at
the end.
White took the lead in the first
round and had the Californian hang
ing on and groggy most of the round
The Chicagoan slowed up, however,
and Ritchie came back and took the
lead in the second and third rounds.
The remainder of the battle was
Whites, except the seventh and tenth
periods, which were even.
The battle was one of the hardest
ever seen here. Ritchie realized he
was against a hard hoy early in the
fight and did most of the boring in
but always was met with hard left
jabs to the jaw.
White fought by far the cleaner
battle. His judgment of distance was
better and his lefts to the face and
rights to the body were too much for
the champion.
Ritchie used a left swing repeat
edly, but frequently missed and then
was forced to clinch. Twice Referee
Harry Stout wrenched the defeated
man’s hands from the ropes while in
clinches.

'T'HE Chandler proves what
is possible in six-cylinder
economy, coupled with six
cylinder power and comfort.
The Chandler motor runs
with all the precision of the
finest watch. This perfect,
continuous flow of silc.nt
power comes from the six
cylinder experience that is
built into its long-stroke
motor.
The men who build the Chand
ler had been building the
highest grade high - priced
sixes in America for six years
before they designed the
Chandler.
Power—that is, power actu
ally delivered to the rear
wheels —is not a matter of
dimensions. It’s a matter of
performance.
Chandler power is enhanced
by Chandler light weight.
Don’t buy any car till you
know what it weighs—on the
scales.
If you want economy keep
the weight below the 3000-
pound mark.
The pure stream-line body de
sign of the Chandler is the ulti
mate in gracefulness. Crowned
fenders and absolutely clean
running boards. Four beau
tiful types of body touring,
roadster, coupe and limousine.

Heavy weight means power wasted.
Heavy weight is a raid on your pock
etbook.
And a heavy six cannot give you
greater service than a light six that’s
equally well built.
By modem engineering methods, pressed
steel and cast aluminum take the place
of heavy forgings in the Chandler. This
gives greatest strength with lightest
weight.
Chandler power is enhanced, too, *-y im-
Which Light Weight Six Are Yok Going to Buy?
IF you pay more than fifteen hundred dollars for an automobile you are surely going to buy
a six. And it must be a light six. Your only problem is which one to choose.
Which One?
Will you buy a light weight six that is an
after-thought, a modification or abbrevia
tion of some larger model, or will you buy
the light weight six that is just what its de
signers started out to build the best car
they know how to build, regardless of cost?
Will you choose a light six that has been
rushed out to meet competition, when you
can just as well get one that was carefully
designed, by men who know, to meet a
market and fulfill its requirements?
If you study all the light weight sixes carefully, If you
see how they are designed, if you consider their equip
ment, if you examine their workmanship, if you meas
ure the six-cylinder experience of the builders back of
them, you will choose the Chandler.
