I THURSDAY. MAY 28. MILITARY USD S fME FEIST Splendid Feast Last Night at the Armory at Which Captain George Haines Was Toast master. Gen. Duvall Spoke. ■■ ' m The Augusta military boys had a splendid entertainment last night at the Armory. A committee composed of Lieutenants R. B. Smith and O. K. Fletcher prepared a feast of good things to eat and it was one of the most enjoyable affairs ever held in this city or section by any military or ganization. The affair was partici pated in by the three Augusta infan try companies and the Richmond Hus sar*. Capt. George Haines, of the Richmond Bight Infantry, was toast master and he presided in graceful fashion. Captain Haines first called upon Maj. Abram Levy, commanding the Third Battalion, First Infantry, Na tional Guard of Georgia, for an ad dress. Maj. Levy spoke of the chang ing sentiment among the merchants and business men in favor of the na tional guardsmen. It was Maj. Levy who did as much or more than any other man to land the encampment of troops for the 9th division at Augusta this summer. Maj. Levy worked on the plan tirelessly for several months. Addresses were also made last night at the military banquet tty Lieut. Hugh Walker, U. S. N.. retired, Capt. Jack Young, of the Hussars, Lieutenant Garrett, Lieutenant Levy, and others, while the principal speaker of the evening was General W. P. Duvall, U. S. A., retired. At the conclusion ol the entertainment Capt. Young, in be half of the other officers presented Capt. George Haines with a beautiful stein as an appreciation of his services as toastmaster. Capt. Haines is a very popular officer. FEAST OF SMOOTH IT TELFAIR TEH “Festival of the First Fniits” Falls This Year on May 31st, Sunday. Shabuoth, "The Feast of Weeks,” also called "The Feast o£ the First Fruits” falls according to the Jewish calendar, on the sixth of Sivian which will occur this year on the thirty-first of May. Its name is derived from the seven weeks which elapsed between the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt and their arrival at Mt. Sinai. Like its companion holiday, the Feast of Passover, It too, has both an agricultural and a historical aspect. This was the early harvest season when the first of the wheat, baked In two loaves of bread, was brought as an offering of gratitude, and as a token of man's dependence upon the TYBEE EXCURSIONS / VIA Central of Georgia Railway Commences Next Sunday, May 31st. $1.75 ROUND TRIP $1.75 Train Leaves Augusta 6:50 am*.City Time Train Leaves Savannah 8:30 pm. Historically it car ries us back in memory to the pro mulgation of the Ten Commandmenta when Israel accepted the new moral code and religious legislation, and was aroused for the first time to the con sciousness of its new spiritual task and destiny. The Ten Command ments are the Magna Charta of Re ligion. Having secured political free dom, Moses found it necessary to give his people religious freedom. The new nation must be buttressed upon relig ious obligation. They may be a King dom, but they must be a Kingdom of Priests, a holy nation. Shebuoth has gained a stronger and a more impressive hold today by en twining its symbolism about the im pressionable child. "Confirmation” is the ceremony expressive of religious consecration. We publicly affirm by this ceremonial that our children, the first ripe fruits of our religious schools, shall stand morally and re ligiously in the same enthusiastic and receptive attitude as did their fathers at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Shabuoth has a distinctly modern and indispensable appeal to the indi vidual. It teaches, first of all, that religion, as a necessity of life, is the actuating motive and sanction of p#- sonal, social and national character. Secondly, it champions the cause of religious freedom n» the most highly prized privilege and possession of the human race. Order of divine service for the com ing festival at Telfair Street Temple is as follows: Saturday night, 8:30. Sunday morning, 11:00. Sunday afternoon, special confirma tion service at 4 o'clock.
