Jacksonville, Fla.—Jacksonville, by bunching hits in the third inning of yesterday's contest and driving Cheney from the mound, got the better of a slugging match. Burmeister, who worked for the locals, was also hit hard but managed to keep the hits fairly scattered and was steady in the pinches. Brilliant fielding under the heavy hitting was a feature of the contest. The. box score: Savannah. Ab R. H. Po. A. Amos Rusie, regarded by many of the veteran fans, who have seen the best of the past and present perl on ers, as just about the greatest pitcher of all time, got only a | aitry $3,200 a >ear in comparison with Walter John sons $13,500, Mathewson’s $15,000, Joe Woo l's SIO,OOO and Nap Rucker’s SIO,OOO. The amount that Amos used to draw down for his brilliant work is an amount that even twirlers fresh from the hushes would sneeze at in the-e days. George Van Haltern had few peers as a base runner, lew as a fielder and thrower, few as a brainy player, and usually could be counted on Tor a goodly number of safe swats each season. In the old days George was figured to be of as much value to his team as Tris Speaker is today, yet George grabbed off only $2,100 a year, while Tris takes unto himself about $18,500. Best Short Stop. Herman Long takes rank as the very best shortstop the game ever has known. Y'et Herman got only about $2,400 for his labors —a sum that is less than half that paid any of the major league shortstops of the present day If “Big Dan” Brouthers were in his prime today he could command —and get—at least SIO,OOO a year. But Dan played in the old days of poor pay and was perfectly satis ied with the $1,900 salary that he drew. “Buck” Ewing got only $2,400 a STANDISH A c AJVe'u?
