TWELVE Automatic Switch Saves Time on Georgia Railroad; how It’s Worked The Georgia Railroad i« putting in an automatic safety switch at the crossing of Kollock and Fenwick Btrets, which is interesting enough to deserve notice. By means of this switch a train can transfer itself onto either track at an intersection without need of stoplng. The switch is worked something af ter this manner: Suppose* two tracks corning together into one track. One is a aiding and the other the main line. On each of the two tracks, just beyond the switch where they Join, is a guide rail. A train runing towards the switch on either of the two tracks runs over the guide rail and by its own weight .>pf*ns the switch ahead of it so that it runs free onto the train. There is also an attachment by which a train running in the opposite direc tion. that is, approaching the switch from the single-track side, can open whichever switch it likes and run onto either track. TIPs is done by a lever attached h the engine, which catches hold of an attachment on the side of the. trac k just before coming to tin Florida Excursion via Georgia & Florida Ry. Tuesday June ?th. Broad St. swatch, and which the engfnecr can set to either open or close the switch ahead of him. These attachments ha ve not lie* * adopted on the engines of the Georgia Railroad as yet, hut as soon as enough automatic switches have been installed to make it worth while, they will no doubt be atached to al the engines • the road. T rains coming into the station fr< Atlanta will now save from three to ten minutes through the installation of this new device. They wlllno longer have stop while a man unlocks, and relocks a •witch. At Decatur, where one of switches has ben installed, freight trains save fifteen. and passenger trains eight minutes through its Use. The place is in the bottom of a decid ed dip, so that now the trains can run through at thirty miles an hour, there by making the upgrade beyond the switch on their momentum, instead of having to stop In the bottom and climb laboriously up the other side. The Decatur switch has been in operation s u.ie five months. The Kollock Street switch goes into operation this afternoon about three o'clock. Washable Suits, $4.00 up, at Mertjns.
