the intricate network
of nerves involved.
In this manner it
has such a splendid
influence as to justi-

who have used it speak In highest praise
of the immense relief it affords. Partlcu

the absence of morning sickness, absence
of strain on the ligaments and freedom
from those many other distresses usually
looked forward to with such concern.
There is no question but what
'Mother's Friend” has a marked tendency
to relieve the mind and this of itself in

FOR GOV’T. CONSTRUCTION.
Washington, D. C—After concurring
in the house provision that one of the
two new battleships provided for in
the naval appropriation bill be built in
a government navy yard, the senate
today assured construction at Brook
lyn by refusing to appropriate $200,-
000 to fit up another yard for con
struction purposes. The amendment
providing for government construc
tion was carried 40 to 15 and the house
provision for fitting up a second navy
yard was defeated 44 to 12.
RESPITE FOR DYNAMITERS.
Chicago.—The date set for the 24
defendants in the dynamite cases to
surrender themselves at the prison at
Leavenworth or to the United States
marshal here, was today deferred from
June 6th, the date originally set, to
June 25th. The respite is due to the
fact that President Wilson needs more
time to study the petitions for their
pardon, presented when the last court
decision went against them.

HARDWICK SENDS
DEFI JO BOTH
Candidate for Senate Issues
Challenge for Debate to Both
Gov. Slaton and Felder.
Atlanta, Ga. —Congressman Thomas
W. Hardwick was in Atlanta yester
day, on his way to Senoia, Caweta
county, where he spoke last night. Mr.
Hardwick authoried the statement that
he would open his headquarters in At
lanta at the Kimball house on or about
June 20th. John T. West, of Thom
son, is to manage his campaign, as
sisted by Judge K. W. Jordan, of San
dersville; Messrs. D. G. Fogarty and
C. E. Dunbar, of Augusta, and J. E.
Hyman, of Sandersville, Ga. Mr. Hard
wick states that he is much pleased
with the progress of his campaign and
is delighted with the splendid recep
tion he is receiving in his canvass.
He purposes to canvass the state
thoroughly and to wage an aggressive
campaign.
When asked about Governor Slaton's
statement, published yesterday, Mr.
Hardwick said: "I am gratified that
Mr. Slaton is disposed to become a lit
tle more specific than at first in out
lining his views and positions. As I
purpose to show later, he still has am
ple room for improvement in that re
spect. Surely the people of Georgia
ought to know exactly where each
candidate for the senate stands on
every important issue before the vote
is cast. It shall not be my fault if
they do not get this information.
"Untrue and Silly.”
‘T will not just at this moment
undertake to reply in detail to Mr.
Slaton’s statement. I shal do so later,
and fully. I will only say now that
the feature of his interview, namely,
his charge that Mr. Felder and myself
constitute a political partnership for
the purpose of accomplishing his de
feat. the loser to be awarded by a
federal appointment, is not only un
true, but silly. If Mr. Felder and
I were in any sort of partnership we
would not both be candidates for the
senate, and if both of us were not in

this race no one knows better than

Challenge to Debate.
“Still, I congratulate the governor
on his recently developed desire to
elucidate the issue of the campaign,
so that the light may be turned on
before the vote is taken. I am in thor
ough sympathy with that idea, and in
order to fully co-operate in its ac
complishment I have today invited
Messrs. Slaton and Felder to join me
in a series of joint debates in which
the public can hear us all, weigh us
all and judge us all. man to man, and
lace to face. Surely a gentleman so
brave in the newspapers as Governor
Slaton, so willing to make unwarrant
ed claims for his own record, and at
tacks upon those of his opponents, will
not shirk a full diseusion of the is
sues.
"The debates, if we can arrange
them, can and will he conducted on a
high plane, and can and ought to be .
dignified and friendly discussion of
the public issues involved, free from
personal bitterness or abuse —I believe
each of the candidates would strive t«
accomplish that, besides the punish
ment that the public would swiftly and
surely visit upon any candidate who
failed to do so would he an additional
guarantee that wo could have such de
-1 bates. I earnestly hope that Messrs.
Slaton and Felder will accept my sug
gestion and that the debates can be
speedily arranged.”
Mr. Hardwick makes public the fol
lowing letters sent Governor Slaton
and Mr. Felder:
To Mr. Slaton.
Atlanta, Fa., June 1, 15114.
Hon. John M. Slaton. Atlanta, Ga.
My Dear Sir: in view of recent de
velopments, and because the public is
entitled to full and accurate knowl
edge of the issues between the various
candidates to fill the nnexpired term
of Senator Bacon, 1 wish to invite you
to join me in a series of joint discus ■
sions of those issues before the peo
ple of Georgia. I have addressed a
similar invitation to the Hon. Thomas
S. Felder, and think, in justice to us
all that the debate should he parti
cipated in by all three of us. i did
not address a similar invitation to
Messrs. Hutchins and Cooper, because
it would be impracticable for all five
of us to participate in the discussion
without lengthening it too much, and
because in your publication of yester
day you do not assail In any way the
conduct or records of these gentlemen,
while you do make such attack on both
Mr. Felder and myself.
It is my idea that if possible we
ought to have about twelve of these
joint debates —one in each congres
sional district of the state, and I think
we can arrange to have most of them
before the legislature meets, and on
Saturdays during its session. How
ever, I am thoroughly willing to leave
all details as to the number, time,
place and terms of discussion ,to a
committee of three, one to be select
ed by each of us—and if you are will
ing to this arrangement, I name Hon.
John T. West, of Thomson, Ga., as
my friend to confer with any friend
you may name.
As I will he in Washington, D. C.
for a few nays after Wednesday of this
week, please address your reply to me
there.
With assurances of personal esteem,
I am, Very truly yours
THOMAS W. HARDWICK.
To Mr. Felder.
Hon. Thomas S. Felder,
Macon. Ga.
Dear Sir: I have today sent to
Hon. John M. Slaton an invitation to
participate in a series of joint diseeus
sions on the issues of the senatorial
campaign. I believe, as I am sure you
do .that the people of Georgia are en
titled to have the issues fully and
fairly disecussed before the vote is
taken, and that they can best weigh us
all and judge us all if we all meet in
fair discussion of the issues, man to
man, and face to face. lam sure we
could conduct such a discussion on a
high and honorable plane free from
personal abuse or bitternes. It seems
to me that it would only be fair that
all three of us participate in these de
bates, if they can be arranged, and that
if possible, we should have twelve of
these, one in each congressional dis
trict. However, lam willing to leave
all the details as to the number, time,
place and terms of these debates to a
committee of three delegats, one to
be selected by each of us, and I hereby
designate as my friend to serve on
such committee, and to confer with the
gentlemen named by Governor Slaton
and yourself, Hon. John T. West, of
Thomson.
As I will return to Washington for a
few days after Wednesday, of this
