TUESDAY, JUNE 2. Felder Replies to Governor Slaton in Red Hot Speech at Morgan, Calhoun County Morgan, Ga. —In his speech on Mon day at Morgan, Calhoun county, Hon. T. S. Felder, candidate for the senate, replied to Governor Slaton’s attack on Hardwick and himself. Mr. Felder said in part: In reference to Governor’ Slaton's proclamation which appeared in yes terday’s papers I have this to say: In his original announcement for the United States senate he submitted his candidacy to the people of Georgia on the fact that he was a native Geor gia* and the statement that his creed rested in the established principles of Democracy, coupled with the politic ian’s unfailing reference to economy in public affairs and the promotion of agricultural interests. It is evident that he has reached ihe conclusion that he can not ride into office in this contest on these gen eralities, and he now adopts, and puts forward as his own. measures which 1 advocated in my opening speech, de livered in Perry more than a month ago, and which I have since been stressing in many sections of the state. ” , Powd, ' ra > >» the original prescription of Dr. C. Get The Habit In the Perry speech I insisted that federal judges should be appointed for a definite period of years instead of for life; that relief should be given the farmers of Georgia from prosecutions in the federal courts lor alleged viola tions of the peonage statute; and that the national government should make appropriations to aid in the improve ment of the public roads of the state. These measures the governor now shys he stands for. I am not sur prised at the course which our astute chief executive is pursuing. He keeps his ear close to the ground, and he has heard the voice of the people approv ing my position on these questions. He believes they are popular. His action in this instance is fairly illustrative of his whole political life. Pursuing the line of least resistance he has always lacked the courage to take the initia tive and though he boasts of twenty years service to the people and says he is running on a record of "tried fit ness’’ he can not claim one construc tive measure of his own. The governor’s charge that Con- ENTER YOUR BABY’S NAME AT ONCE IT IS NOT TOO LATE $500.00 IN GOLD IS WITHIN YOUR REACH gressman Hardwick and I are «o ooperating in an effort to defeat him is the merest dap-trap and intended as a plea for sympathy for the un der-dog. The fact is that Mr. Hard wick and I were waging an active but manly contest for the senatorship several weeks before the governor an nounced his candidacy, and before it became known that the Governor had a string tied to Senator West. The governor stated at the opening of his campaign that he would not make any political speeches or in dulge in Joint debate for the reason that it would precipitate a contest of mud-slinging and billingsgate. Shield ed, however, by the respect always ac corded the occupant of the governor’s chair he begins the slinging of mud from the governor’s office. I shall not answer him in kind, for it has been my deliberate purpose from the opening of this campaign to conduct it on a high plane, leaving out per sonalities and attempting to win this high office on such merit as I may possess and not on the weakness of my adversaries. It does not make me any better man. any more capable of filling the office of United States senator, by showing my opponents to be unfit. My speeches throughout the state have been sub stantially a repetition of my first speech delivered at Perry which ap peared in the public press. The gov ernor’s charge that I have attacked him from numerous angles is untrue. I have not made such attacks. His as sumption that such charges have been made by me is evidently due to the fact that he knows himself to be vul nerable. Discussing the geographical situa tion, about which I have said nothing, the governor wearies us with a eulogy of his impartiality as a public officer, and al the same time states how par tial he has been to the people of South Georgia in appointing a United States senator, two judges of the court of appeals and an attorney general from this section. This action is not sur prising at ail to any one who is famil iar with Governor Slaton’s political methods. He realizes that he is weak in South Georgia and that fact ex plains his partiality to this section. The governor wants to be senator. He appointed a temporary administra tor on the senatorial estate upon the death of Senator Bacon and now urgres the fact of such appointment as a rea son why he should be named as per manent administrator by the p«v e. He charges me with oposing a bill to erect a nfew depot on the state's property in Atlanta, but failed to tell you the nature of the bill. The bill which I opposed proposed to appro priate funds in the state treasury which under the Constitution could not be used for any purpose except the payment of the bonded debt of the state. I assisted in the defeat of this hill because It was In flagrant viola tion of the Constitution. His charge that my position was Influenced by prejudice toward Atlanta Is childish. He expresses the opinion that I should not he elected to the senate be cause I resigned my office during the dependency of litigation between the state and certain copper companies located across the state line in Ten nessee. This litigation has been pend ing in one shape or another since 190fi and I was the third Attorney General to participate in it. I purposely de layed my resignation until after the motion dealing with one phase of the case had been passed upon by the su preme court of the United States, left the suit In good shape for my suc cessor to carry on. The court did not overrule the motion as stated by the $300.00 IN GOLD THIRD GRAND PRIZE Call at the Shower of Gold Dept., 639 Broad St. Or Phone 326, and we Will Call on You THE AUGUSTA HERALD. AUGUSTA, GA. governor, but directed that testimony he taken. The taking of testimony under the order was not to begin until the lirst day offline —a month and a half after my successor was appoint ed. The propriety of my resignation as contrasted with the governor's course in holding one office and exer cising its [lowers while devoting his energies to seeking another, I leave for the people to pass upon. The governor's proclamation in the drafting of which during the past two weeks he lias enjoyed the aide assist ance of Campaign Managers Newell, Uhlm and Mrrow Is an unmistakable indication that things are going badly with the governor. 200 SOUTHERN GOLFERS 81 II The 13 th Anual Tournament Starts at Memphis.
